⭐If you’re already sold on the Bible as the source of the history of ancient Israel, this book adds a a little to that account, but it assumes the central narrative of the Bible as factual. Interesting, but not useful as an independent presentation of the history of ancient Israel.

⭐This book is becoming dated, but remains a useful overview of the complex history of Ancient Israel. It’s very readable for the non-specialist and includes a useful if now quite dated bibliography.However, the transfer to ebook format was done poorly. There are typos from the OCR process including at one point a word that begins with Roman type (as expected) but that then ends with a Chinese character. I deducted 1 star due to this.

⭐History can be a prickly subject to those whose beliefs are founded on a perceived understanding. Refreshing to read a warts and all account of a very chaotic period. If only people would take the time to read the past so to not make the same mistakes today.

⭐This was my favorite book from the many I ordered in advance of my trip to Israel. I liked the layout of info and the objective viewpoint. Lots of good facts. Let’s face it, this could be a 50 volume subject, so a single well written book is appreciated.

⭐Michael Grant is a peerless writer on the ancient world. His earlier book on King Herod was superb. This comprehensive review of the history of Israel is the best thing of its kind I have ever seen. I am ordering a copy for myself even before finishing it. It will be a key reference book and essential background preparation for my own book in progress about early Christianity. Michael Grant knows how to write. And he covers all essential points in clear and insightful fashion.

⭐Engaging read. A scholarly, well researched text which places Biblical events and figures into context. The only thing which prevented a 5 star review was, as is frequently the case with Kindle texts, the intrusion of typos. True, they do not affect the enjoyment of the text but do frustrate when effective proof reading should be a minimum expectation.

⭐Excellent book. Possible need to attend a class to read the bible first- but this fills in the context and background- scholarly hence the facts are reliable, readable and clear. Gives you the basics!

⭐Following every history book written by the BRILLIANT Michael Grant, I’ve ended reading this book. I must addmit that I was not dissapointed, quite the opposite I very much enjoyed it. A must read & must have history book of ancient Jewish history.

⭐Good stuff

⭐A sympathetic and knowledgeable history of this flashpoint of the present Middle East.
