Description
The gripping story of the First Crusade, as witnessed firsthandThe fall of Jerusalem in 1099 to an army of exhausted and starving western European soldiers was one of the most extraordinary events in history—with a legacy that remains controversial more than nine centuries later. This remarkable collection contains firsthand accounts from the knights, religious leaders, and peasants who experienced the First Crusade in all its cruelty and strangeness. Edited with an introduction and notes by one of the foremost experts on the Crusades, Chronicles of the First Crusade is a comprehensive look at the climax of Christian fervor and the record of an ultimately futile attempt to implant a European kingdom in an overwhelmingly Muslim world. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Great organization and translations
⭐As others have stated, this is an excellent work putting together primary sources to present a chronological narrative of the first crusade. The translations are very good and easy to read. Each section has an introduction by the editor/translator providing background information for the primary sources, and the footnotes are helpful. Some background knowledge on the first crusade would be helpful before reading this work.
⭐Great book, used it as a primary source for my Medieval Europe research paper. The author uses multiple original source documents and weaves them together to paint a picture of the Crusade from multiple perspectives.
⭐This is my favorite book on the First Crusade. It brings together excerpts from numerous primary sources to create a chronological narrative of the events of First Crusade. If you like reading primary sources, this is the book for you.
⭐A great collection of First Crusade sources that are otherwise very pricey and often difficult to find. Well put together.
⭐This is one, if not the, most rewarding book I’ve read on the Crusades so far. Christopher Tyerman does an excellentintroduction to a fascinating historical record which takes the reader into the atmosphere and places the crusadesinvoke. And his helpful segment prefaces reinforces the selected writings which follow. This Penguin work is anexcellent collection.
⭐very beauty
