Description
The Templars fought against Islam in the crusader east for nearly two centuries. During that time the original small band grew into a formidable army, backed by an extensive network of preceptories in the Latin West. In October 1307, the members of this seemingly invulnerable and respected Order were arrested on the orders of Philip IV, King of France and charged with serious heresies, including the denial of Christ, homosexuality and idol worship. The ensuing proceedings lasted for almost five years and culminated in the suppression of the Order. The motivations of the participants and the long-term repercussions of the trial have been the subject of intense and unresolved controversy, which still has resonances in our own time. In this new edition of his classic account, Malcolm Barber discusses the trial in the context of new work on the crusades, heresy, the papacy and the French monarchy.

⭐Excellent book. Great historical background and very fair assessment of the facts. This book gives a full description of the trial of the Templar Order. Must have as well as Barber’s other book regarding the overall history of this exceptional order.
⭐I am very interested in everything I can find to read about the Templars. They were a great warriors who werein the end betrayed by their Church and the Countries who employed them. They had a masterful way ofexpanding their lands and monies. Those in power destroyed to take it all from them. Mary
⭐Great history of the Knights of Molay and the Templars!
⭐I AM A KNIGHT TEMPLAR HERE IN MELBOURNE ,AUSTRALIA.I VISITED DURNSTEIN ,AND THE RUINED CASTLE ON THE TOP OF THE MOUNT OVERLOOKING THE TOWNSHIP ON THE RHINE WHERE EDWARD 1ST WAS IMPRISONED ON HIS RETURN FROM THE CRUSADE IN 1192
⭐I bought this book as a present and it was about 13 dollars for a used copy but it could have easily passed as brand new. Came on time too!
⭐The complete, as complete as it could be, story about the process against the templars. The best I have found so far.
⭐Very historical, but difficult to follow due to repeated events and the time period covered. It jumped timeperiods and countries. The historical names of the people involved seemed factual, but their time in historymade their involvement difficult to follow.
⭐Barber is the leading authority on the Templars. I loved this book and it answered many questions I had. I am hoping for a new edition from his earlier A NEW KNIGHTHOOD.
⭐Malcolm Barber is one of the foremost English historians on the Knights Templar. His scholarship is reasonable, considering there is much we will never truly know, when we are without the original documents. This is evident in every page that he writes. His conclusions on the final stages of the the Order, before the dissolution, his reasoning on the motives of the interested parties, from Philip IV of France to Clement V, the Pope, are both persuasive and likely to be correct. He also summarises the many other views, held by other scholars in this area. It was a pleasure to read. From the fall of Acre in 1291, their retreat to Cyprus, and the sheer costs and expenses of continuing to do what they did in their heyday, meant the the Knights Templar had lost their original purpose. Others with more venal motives, such as Philip wanted their wealth and in one way Clement V outmanoeuvred Philip of France by transferring most of the Templars wealth, which was in land, to the Knights Hospitaller. If you want to know what happened and why, buy this book and enjoy it.
⭐I have the paperback and Kindle versions. Unfortunately, the Kindle version contains many typos and on p. 93 even this nonsense, ‘John of Chabut had been ruledlons believed the driving force … One star off for the Kindle version.
⭐Bought as a gift for family member, very pleased.
⭐The best book I’ve read regarding templars ever over a 25 year period
⭐Very good book
