⭐This is a good book, although I found the ending a little detached from the main theme – the life of Camillus. Or should we call it an “esoteric life of Camillus”, for the book is not aimed at his biography but rather his deeds, and his relationship with his patron deity – Mater Matuta, the Dawn. Georges, with his typical ardor and humor analyses the recurring events in Camillus military life and masterfully connects them to the cult of the above mentioned goddess. Georges very cleverly notices that the “life of Camillus” is a mythological epic that hardly has any historical reality. Though it is very real in the mind of everyone who is familiar with an Old Rome’s history. As I said, the book ends on a rather strange note about the Mater Matuta and the flute-player cult of the Ancient Rome. I didn’t see the connection between that and Camill, but I am sure there is one, and will probably be revealed to me one day.
