Description
A concise and timely account of Hitler’s—and fascism’s—rise to power and ultimate defeat, from one of America’s most famous journalists. American journalist and author William L. Shirer was a correspondent for six years in Nazi Germany—and had a front-row seat to Hitler’s mounting influence. His most definitive work on the subject, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, is a riveting account defined by first-person experience interviewing Hitler, watching his impassioned speeches, and living in a country transformed by war and dictatorship. Shirer was originally commissioned to write The Rise and Fall of Adolf Hitler for a young adult audience. This account loses none of the immediacy of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich—capturing Hitler’s ascendence from obscurity, the horror of Nazi Germany’s mass killings, and the paranoia and insanity that marked the führer’s downfall. This book is by no means simplified—and is sure to appeal to adults as well as young people with an interest in World War II history. “For nearly 100 years William L Shirer has spoken to us of fascism, Nazis, and Hitler . . . [He] tells the unvarnished truth as he experienced it . . . I figured this school-type book wasn’t going to tell me anything new. But when I started reading, I realized that I wasn’t reading for the facts anymore. I listened to his story and heard the urgency in his voice: a voice from nearly 60 years ago telling us the truth about today.” —Daily Kos
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Intended to symbolize the rise and fall of Hiker rather than be a detailed account, found in Shirer’s complete account, The Rise an Fall of the Third Reich.
⭐William Shirer is one of the most engaging historians to read, and contemporary to this period. I note that this volume was much shorter than I expected.
⭐Fast moving condensed bio of Hitler by a man who saw him first hand and is perhaps the greatest author on Hitler and the 3rd Reich. The author moves through Hitler’s life and conquests both politically and militarily that you should consider this a very worthwhile primer. I will now move toward one of Shirer’s more detailed books since I am still fascinated on how a population could follow a man proposing such violent and progressively vile changes in government and life even murdering his own supporters over any attempt to share the government. As Shirer notes in his brief conclusion, Hitler’s successes muted criticism and his early victories mesmerized the population. One has to be alarmed that the severe post World War I penalties that caused suffering in Germany followed by the Great Depression can bring opportunities to mad men that propose that the ‘bigger the lie, the greater the impact’.
⭐I didn’t realize this was written for young people and it did a good job for the younger readers. I think it was too much to expect a watered down version of his “Rise and Fall” to be nearly as good. Not worth the time for a serious study of Hitler.
⭐I read a lot of WWII history. In my opinion Shirer’s The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is the definitive work on the subject. If you have read the Rise and Fall recently, this book may not add much to your knowledge. If you read it a while ago (6 years ago for me) it is a great refresher. This easy read doesn’t go deep but it provides a concise view of Hitler’s time on the world stage. I enjoyed it a great deal.
⭐There is a lot written about Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich, this is my third reading of the same trying to understand why the German people were cheated and betrayed by Hitler’s selfishness and greed for power to rule Europe and the world at large. It is a very big lesson to the world and mankind, such people still exist today.
⭐This book doesn’t have the detail of Shirer’s much longer work, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. Instead the book is an excellent compact source for a reader who is primarily interested in Hitler, himself, rather than the complexities of World War II. It concentrates on the Fuhrer in all his evil genius. I was born in 1937 so I have had plenty of time to become acquainted with the standard lore of Adolph Hitler. Nevertheless, until I read this book I hadn’t completely grasped how truly wicked this man was. At 179 pages, it’s a quick read.
⭐William Shirer had a front row seat into the world of Hitler. He saw the insanity and gave us a look into the man he called the warlord. Having access into files that were not destroyed and research from those around Hitler makes for history that should never be forgotten.
⭐I purchased this book for a neighbour as he was doing a course in history
⭐I noticed a lot of paragraphs seemed to have been taken from “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich”
⭐Excellent book written by an outstanding author who was actually in Germany during the dark years.Refreshing to read a book written from first hand experience.
