Description
For nearly thirty-eight years, Henry VIII ruled the Kingdom of England, and the three children of his six marriages would between them reign for aa further half-century and more. His reign has never ceased to provoke argument, not least because of one of the great titles which he seized for himself: Supreme Head of the Church in England. This claim was to have consequences which are still unravelling today; at the time it led to many deaths and much bitterness. Was Henry as selfish, cruel monster, or a farsighted architect of his country’s future greatness? How were his changes in church and state understood and received by his subjects? Tese are some of the issues discussed by the essayists in the collection.

⭐no dust jacket provided with book. not good for a book with that price..
⭐I enjoyed this collection of essays by Tudor historians. The range of subjects, from the big issues of foreign and religious policy to the narrower focus of drama and royal progresses, offers the Tudor enthusiast ample opportunity to deepen his or her understanding of the era and its events. Even when the material was familiar to me, each essay offered something new, whether it was a point I hadn’t previously considered, details I hadn’t known before, or the author’s own interpretation of the historical record. Notes and a bibliography on each section allow readers to explore the topics further. The nine chapters:Eric Ives focuses on the privy chamber and its influence on politics.John Guy assesses the roles of Wolsey and Cromwell.Neil Samman discusses royal progresses during the first half of Henry’s reign.Richard Hoyle looks at royal revenue and financing for Henry’s wars.David Potter examines Henry’s shifting foreign policy throughout the reign.Virginia Murphy discusses the arguments and writings concerning the king’s Great Matter.Diarmaid MacCulloch writes about the evolution of Henry’s religious policy in the 1530s and 40s.Seymour Baker House looks at the use of drama and literature as propaganda during the Reformation.Robert Whiting offers a look at the state of the English Church on the eve of the Reformation and public response to the various reforms. All of them were interesting and informative, even the chapter on finances, a subject which normally puts me to sleep instantly. Definitely worth reading!
⭐It was in such perfect condition I think I am the first to read this book. Beautifully packaged too. Thank you.
⭐very pleased with this book.
⭐The material inside the book covers international relations – not as the cover of the book suggests. What a waste of money
