This is the first fully documented study of Negro slave revolts in The United States. Special attention is paid to the famous slave rebellion of Nat Turner, into the revolts led by Denmark Vesey and Gabriel. This pioneering study remains a major contribution to the destruction of the myth of Afro – American docility.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This book has a lot of information that is not in history books. It shows the conditions, fears of slave owners, slaves fighting for their freedom to escape cruelty and inhumane devastations imposed on them, demographics of that time and much more.Gives documentations of the hundreds of slave revolts that took place in South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and other slave states. Tells how Native Americans, other nations and White sympathizers helped in the revolts and were punished and/or executed. Dispells the lie that Blacks did not fight for their freedom. They did numerous times. Book shows that there was always a revolt someplace. Tells of outcome of many and why most revolts we’re unsuccessful. Very illuminating. A must read.
⭐Comprehensive, thoroughly researched.
⭐This book is written in a very proper and scholarly manner, which makes the tone of the book quite dry at times. Nonetheless, Herbert Aptheker did extensive research about the slave revolts that happened in America, which is evident through the lengthy bibliography located in the back of the book. I learned much about the enslaved black person’s mentality and it definitely was not docile and gullible. One of the instruments of control used by slave owners was religion but they only used certain scriptures that promoted their rhetoric of inferiority of the black race. They did not teach the biblical message of love and kindness, and the master class prescribed against doing so as it may have given enslaved blacks a different way of thinking about their social position in America. This book is full of gems and if you are really interested in this topic then you will be able to endure Mr. Aptheker’s dull report about slave revolts.
⭐Through a mass of detailed historical evidence, the author makes it abundantly clear that the Antebellum South was highly militarized, although not overtly so, thus making it easier to see how the Southern States, expert in martial arts, would have thought they in their ignorance that they could beat the North. More to the author’s point, also makes clear how the enslaved felt about their condition and how over a period of more than a century they never gave up hope.
⭐I accidentally bought 2 and am not complaining; took one to my school for teachers to use as a resource; Aptheker’s seminal work showing that NO slavery was not in any way shape or form of benefit to the enslaved. Helpful for kids to understand their anger against a racist society; their forefathers were angry too! There’s nothing wrong w/ our kids; there is everything wrong w/ our capitalist system. The blame the victim game is a powerful one which leaves many youth wondering why they’re so angry…
⭐How is the not taught in every school in the United States of America? The history of people of African decent is literally the fabled story of freedom, justice and all the other stuff told to the rest of the world.
⭐it was a gift for a friend ,,,he really like it so iam happy for that..
⭐Not what I expected. However, some good information to know.
