Description

In the summer of 1831, a band of some forty slaves led by Nat Turner attacked slave-owning residents of Southampton County, Virginia. One of the largest and most violent revolts in the history of the young nation, the rebellion took the lives of some sixty white men, women, and children. An outcry against the South’s exploitative slave system, the revolt was suppressed within forty-eight hours, and Turner, who eluded authorities for months, was eventually captured, sentenced to death, and executed. The impact of Turner’s uprising was monumental. Abolitionists looked for ways to encourage and support future insurrections while white Southerners took revenge on both slave and free African-Americans. Nearly 200 blacks, many of whom had nothing to do with the rebellion, were beaten, tortured, and murdered by white mobs.Herbert Aptheker’s account of the bloodiest slave uprising in U.S. history was the first full-length study of its kind. Meticulously researched, it explores the nature of Southern society in the early nineteenth century and the conditions that led to the rebellion. Described by the Journal of American History as “a thorough and scholarly treatment,” the text includes Turner’s “Confessions,” recorded before his execution in 1831. Plus, the events in this book helped inspire the acclaimed 2016 movie Birth of a Nation.

⭐Update: I finished and it got better. Plus has the full confession in the back. 4/23/22———————–I’m on page 66 and I have to stop. I’ll finish it, but I’m going to start something else. I applaud Mr. Aptheker for his research. I just wish the writing was better.

⭐This is my absolute favorite movie to date!!

⭐Excellent source of info re the real not the reel Nat Turner. Very interesting personality, with a strong faith and purpose guiding his actions. He was definitely not docile, stupid, retarded. He was a thinking man, a literate man, a brave man who accepted his fate without question. And, he necessarily had a strong objection to being enslaved. Wouldn’t you??

⭐History

⭐I found this book to be inrormative and well researched. However, I did not find anything new or revealing in it. that is not to say that there is not a fund of information in this book. However, I have been researchhing this topic for quite some time, so my view would not be the view of a person who had no previous knowledge of this subject. I think someone venturing into the story of Nat Turner would find it quit intriquing.

⭐Kindle version needs page numbers. It’s pretty useless without them when I need to be able to find a certain page for school assignments.

⭐This book was such a painful read. However, the subject matter of the evils of slavery must never ever be forgotten.Nat Turner was a true hero, and he died believing that his slave rebellion was the correct course of action to take.Though his actions were in the main unsuccessful, Turner left his mark on many of the slave owners in the SouthernStates of America, by making them nervous and wary about the possibility of other insurrections.Turner once said: ‘I would never be any service to anyone as a slave’. Is it any wonder that he rebelled against bondage?Herbert Aptheker’s well researched book concludes with Nat Turners so-called 1831 “confession”. I won’t spoilthe ending for anyone who wants to read this fascinating book, but suffice to say, that the conclusion of thisbook doesn’t seem to match-up to what had gone on before. An afflictive, but a highly recommended read!

⭐after watching 12 years a slave and seeing the slaves attitude to their situation i was pleased that nat turner had the courage to take on the slavers even though he and his men new it meant their death, better that than total submission to evil men.

⭐Great purchase
