⭐Professor Engelking’s “General Topology” joins a long list of out-of-print historical texts ignored by cell-phone freaks. General topology in general matters as the purest abstraction of a “space” that can be viewed as easily from the outside in, as from the inside out. In fact the definition “open set” captures this fact very elegantly and subtly. It was coined by I think Weierstrass during a time when any further elaboration would be a psychiatric offense. We recall the warning of the Talmudic sages detailed by Leo Strauss on Maimonides that “one must not go beyond certain limits: one must not reflect on what is above, what is below, what was before, and what will be hereafter.” So “open set” it is, and there’s an end to it. Fine if you don’t want to be institutionalized, but the other extreme of that is an out of print masterpiece like this, while quantum computing is an arms race. There’s an especially important application of Urysohn’s Lemma and Tychonoff spaces (constructs involving the real number continuum on the unit interval I = [0,1]) that is directly relevant to quantum computing, as a measure of the extent to which a system can clear decoherence and exhibit quantum behavior macrosopically. But a mere suggestion that topology is anything more than an elite “game,” something we do because we “like” it is, once more, a psychiatric offense. Having said that, this book is perfectly safe, and sticks to the facts: elegant theorem after elegant theorem whose applications are left to the universe and our progeny, our progeny who is too absorbed in texting to realize anything profound about Stone spaces! According to the Wikipedia, Professor Engelking is also quite the literati who has translated “Madame Bovary” into Polish, and it’s not hard to believe that the literary process is the next less pure level of a Boolean logic via compact spaces (Stone spaces being the dual nature of Boolean logic). We read literary fiction to trace broken symmetries externally by labeling interactions (which any semilattice (like the lattice of open sets) is capable of providing), and moving from adamantine Boolean logical algebras to the quasi-logical algebra of compact spaces will keep serious hermeneuticists busy for some time. Professor Engelking’s chapter on compact spaces is in fact quite a treat. That’s my favorite chapter as a duality theory enthusiast. To the sensitive, the very spiritual essence of the _physical_ book and the cover diagram are metaphysically potent, a challenge to the optical illusionist, the snake charmer, the doctorer of visual sophistry, and I can stare at the cover diagram for long periods before I giggle and they have to take me away! Heldermann Verlag created a collector’s item and historical artifact in this text, and it’s encyclopedic without being dry! Very few standard references can make that claim. Definitely worth a pretty penny, and sure there’s the PDF file floating around somewhere on the web, but the experience is as drastically different as a digital recording is to a live show! Hopefully there are more secret stashes of this book floating around somewhere, because it would be a detriment to humanity if this physical book were any less available than it is now. (Probably just the English version is this obscure!) I love this book!
⭐I found Engelking a difficult book to study general topology from, but an excellent reference book. Engelking covers wide areas of General topology, starting from the basic definition. At times the exposition seemed to veer into too much technicalities, which seemed to distract one, if one was reading the book alone. What makes the book truly great, however, is its index, and bibliography. It’s wealth of examples and counterexamples is very useful, as well. Finally, the Russian translation seems to be enriched with the comments of translators and more bibliography.
