Description

One of the most widely used reference books on applied mathematics for a generation, distributed in multiple languages throughout the world, this text is geared toward use with a one-year advanced course in applied mathematics for engineering students. The treatment assumes a solid background in the theory of complex variables and a familiarity with complex numbers, but it includes a brief review. Chapters are as self-contained as possible, offering instructors flexibility in designing their own courses. The first eight chapters explore the analysis of lumped parameter systems. Succeeding topics include distributed parameter systems and important areas of applied mathematics. Each chapter features extensive references for further study as well as challenging problem sets. Answers and hints to select problem sets are included in an Appendix. This edition includes a new Preface by Dr. Lawrence R. Harvill.

Pipes (1910–71) joined the faculty of UCLA in 1947 and remained there for the rest of his life. Previously, he taught for eight years at Harvard and for one year at the Rice Institute. This, his first book, was translated into many languages and since 1970 has ranked among the most widely used references on the subject. Lawrence R. Harvill is Professor Emeritus of Engineering Science at the University of Redlands in California.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I cant over-emphasize how good this book is!, it is one thick book, covering a wide array of topics, it is definitely written for engineers and scientists, as opposed to many books out there, here the math is used as a tool to solve problems rather than the main focus point (with the exception of course of topics in which the main purpose is to ilustrate a mathematical method by itself, such as gaussian elimination), the objective of the book is to present different engineering/science problems and then offer the solution using several math techniques , as opposed to many different books out there which do it the other way around, namely focusing on the math and then trying to find ways to apply it, this one is truly an engineering book! That being said, the math level is very advanced most of the time but presented very clearly with concise explanations on how and why certain formula or theorem applies without much of the theoretical math textbooks jibber jabber, followed by a clear selection of examples in which such propositions apply. The book is dated, like many older books it seems to be written in an era which used to favor analytical methods rather than numerical ones, but most of it still applies perfectly today as it did back then, however dont expect Matlab code in it, this is perhaps not the best book if you are in need for quick recipe or algorythm to solve a problem, but rather a book to learn different techniques and apply them to your field of study.Im an electrical engineer and I truly appreciate the abundant chapters focused at my field of study but im sure that if you are an engineer in a different field or a scientist you’ll also appreciate the value of this book since it covers many different disciplines. Eventhough many of the topics in this book are quite advanced, I never felt that the book was over my head. This is one of the best investments I’ve made in a long time, over the years I’ve bought several Dover books because they are relatively cheap and well written, but this one is the best of them all. Many “advanced engineering mathematics” books out there are just a summary of the standard undergraduate engineering curricula, like differential equations, laplace and fourier transforms, linear algebra, etc… this book offers content which I have not seen in any of the applied math text books for engineers. Another thing about applied math textbooks for engineers is that they are quite expensive, this one has a very attractive price tag and amazing content.Bottomline: I love it!

⭐I am writing this review to help the next person considering purchasing this relatively cheap text. Here is my advice: its better not to purchase this book. It simply isn’t worth the cost. While the bool does include many subject, to which credit is due they are treated very very minimally. Some subjects you can’t even follow. Of particular interest is special functions like the Bessel and Hankel function as well as Green’s theorem and Green’s functions are totally incomprehensible. The only reason you may want this text is if you like the outdated notation it uses and just want a nice looking fat math book on your desk or library to look fancy, albeit it is paperback.Go with another book instead. The Fourier transform treatment is awful as well.

⭐I can hardly believe that Louis Pipes taught this course when I attended UCLA and was one of his students.
