Description
This concise book covers the classical tools of PDE theory used in today’s science and engineering: characteristics, the wave propagation, the Fourier method, distributions, Sobolev spaces, fundamental solutions, and Green’s functions. The approach is problem-oriented, giving the reader an opportunity to master solution techniques. The theoretical part is rigorous and with important details presented with care. Hints are provided to help the reader restore the arguments to their full rigor. Many examples from physics are intended to keep the book intuitive and to illustrate the applied nature of the subject. The book is useful for a higher-level undergraduate course and for self-study.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review From the reviews:“This book is intended to give the reader an opportunity to master solving problems in partial differential equations. … This book has been written specifically to satisfy the demand of a wide audience who needs knowledge of how to solve PDE problems … . The book under review is mainly addressed to those in higher-level undergraduate courses and for self-study for both graduate and higher-level undergraduate students.” (Vicenţiu Rădulescu, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2010 k) From the Back Cover This concise book covers the classical tools of PDE theory used in today’s science and engineering: characteristics, the wave propagation, the Fourier method, distributions, Sobolev spaces, fundamental solutions, and Green’s functions. ⭐This book contains short theoretical summaries of various topics, from undergraduate level derivations and manipulations to graduate level topics on Sobolev spaces, basic well-posedness, and distributions. Great collection of classical and modern PDE topics. In my experience, graduate level coursework that focuses on treating PDE as a “big theory” really suffers compared to problem solving approaches. One ends up just copying pages of estimates from Evans, ending up unprepared for research which requires assorted results like covered in this book. One example of the useful results in this book is Problem 25.7, the expression of the H1 norm of a function in terms of its Fourier coefficients (generalization of Parseval’s theorem). This is critical to intuition and many experienced researchers use this heuristic, yet I never learned it from coursework and picked it up from collaborators during research projects. This book isn’t very long and doesn’t go very deep into graduate level topics. It has many problems but not solutions. Nevertheless I found many useful results here, and decided to go through several chapters from start to finish to help me in the future. I wish I had worked through this book in graduate school.
⭐Lots of typos, no motivation anywhere, very few illustrations, irrelevant exercises, summarily a pedagogical disater. The authors don’t care to distinguish between number of iteration and number of derivatives and use the same symbols. A first introducction to generalized functions always needs much more care. This book is more like, ” I remember this from my student days”. Probably the authors have written sort of outline for their course rather than a real reading material for students.
