Description

This book presents William Clifford’s English translation of Bernhard Riemann’s classic text together with detailed mathematical, historical and philosophical commentary. The basic concepts and ideas, as well as their mathematical background, are provided, putting Riemann’s reasoning into the more general and systematic perspective achieved by later mathematicians and physicists (including Helmholtz, Ricci, Weyl, and Einstein) on the basis of his seminal ideas. Following a historical introduction that positions Riemann’s work in the context of his times, the history of the concept of space in philosophy, physics and mathematics is systematically presented. A subsequent chapter on the reception and influence of the text accompanies the reader from Riemann’s times to contemporary research. Not only mathematicians and historians of the mathematical sciences, but also readers from other disciplines or those with an interest in physics or philosophy will find this work both appealing and insightful.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Great piece of historical writing. I now have a much better understanding of how Riemann’s groundbreaking lecture (where he invented Riemannian Geometry) was received. I’ll just mention that Riemann never wrote up the lecture and the whole thing would probably have been forgotten if his good friend Dedikind had not gotten it published about ten years after the lecture.

⭐This is a lame edition. Riemann’s legendary habilitation lecture deserves more attention ! First of all the editor simply used Clifford’s old translation (which is easily available everywhere) instead of providing a new translation & more critical annotation which is lame considering the astronomical high price of the book.I wish more critical scientific & mathematical commentary were provided by specialist instead of just general survey (as is presented in this book). The lecture has serious impact both on mathematics (geometry) & physics. I’m disappointed with the content i.e. the extra materials in the book. I still wonder why Einstein’s & other eminent man’s works are republished with annotations & other materials many times while Riemann barely received any attention both from mathematical & scientific community despite his importance in shaping the progress of both mathematics & science in 20th century.Lastly, the present edition available here in India seems to be seller print on demand & the physical quality, specially the paper isn’t that good. I feel like I have wasted my money.
