Description

Linear Algebra provides a valuable introduction to the basic theory of matrices and vector spaces. The book covers: matrices, vector spaces, bases, and dimension; inner products, bilinear and sesquilinear forms over vector spaces; linear transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalization, and Jordan normal form; and fields and polynomials over fields. Abstract methods are illustrated with concrete examples, and more detailed examples highlight applications of linear algebra to analysis, geometry, differential equations, relativity and quantum mechanics. Rigorous without being unnecessarily abstract, this useful and concise guide to the subject will be important reading for all students in mathematics and related fields.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “Kaye offers this work as a second course in linear algebra. As such, it deals with the specific subject matter of linear algebra in a way that could also be viewed as an introduction to abstract algebra or axiomatic mathematics in general. Knowledge of elementary matrix arithmetic and matrix methods–including the general solution to systems of linear equations and computation of inverses and determinants–is assumed, though these topics are briefly reviewed. Some exposure to abstract vector spaces and the notions of basis and dimension would also be helpful to one wishing to peruse this book. For those with a suitable background, this book provides a very rigorous treatment of the fundamentals of linear algebra, including inner product spaces, bilinear and quadratic forms, orthogonal bases, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and the Jordan canonical form. Certainly appropriate for upper-division undergraduates entertaining thoughts of graduate work in mathematics.”–Choice About the Author Richard Kaye is at University of Birmingham. Rob Wilson is at University of Birmingham.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book presents linear algebra in a beautifully straightforward way, without the distraction of colorful diagrams or the use of calculator screenshots that obscure understanding. It’s a highly recommended text for those who enjoy a no-nonsense explanation of ideas in a clear and deductive style. Each section of this textbook builds smoothly on previous material, and for anyone at least familiar with matrices from precalculus, the development of its content is easy to follow. Just don’t skip parts, and take notes. 🙂

⭐Not good!! No examples solved in the book and no answers to all the execercises. Really bad book. Book only for professors

⭐GeneralThe book is a thin, moderately priced book, but has a satisfying level of content & explanation of semi -introductory undergraduate ‘Linear Algebra’.How does it help students to grasp this topic?’Linear Algebra’ as a topic has a reputation of being hard-work for introductory undergrad. students, but this book excels in zipping together topics that seem isolated, and eventually come together. The explanations (i. m. h. o) can be made bit harder to fathom when the subscripts fonts size for ‘i’ are indistinguishable from ‘1’. This is just a minor problem, but when this is solved the book is a great book and i have enjoyed the time spent studying this area.In essenceWhen i consider the cost of this book and the content quality, this is a fine book of the few needed to crack ‘Linear Algebra’ topics on the way to Galois Theory.

⭐Good book

⭐Good condition. Pleasantly surprised.
