Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This is the fourth volume of the five-volume set of the Selected Works of Mao tse-Tung. This volume contains some of the writings of Mao from the end of the Second World War in August of 1945 until the October Communist Revolution of October of 1949. This was the period of time called the “Third Revolutionary Civil War Period.” The fourth volume also contains extensive footnoting which provides background material describing advance of Mao’s revolutionary forces across the mainland of China.Although the chronological order of the articles in the fourth volume ends with the October Revolution of 1949, the fourth volume continued to have an impression on events in China much after 1949. As the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution that swept over China from 1966 until 1976, the famous “Quotations of Mao tse-Tung,” which had been first published in 1964 played such a large role during the entire time of the Cultural Revolution. Eighty (80) of the individual quotations in the “Quotations” were actually taken from the articles contained in this volume.I purchased the first four volumes of this Selected Works in the period of time of 1976-1977. However, these were paperback additions of the set. I have always preferred hardbound books and recently been trying to collect this set again in the hardbound. Thanks to Amazon.com this task is easier than it used to be. I have recently obtained an April, 1961 hardbound edition of this book complete with its dust cover and protective slip box.
⭐This is the fourth volume of the Selected Works of Mao tse-Tung. The articles contained in this volume are those which were written by Mao tse-Tung from the end of the Second World War in August of 1945 thru the founding of the Peoples Republic of China in October of 1949. During the Second World War the Kuomingtang had dragged its feet on working with the Communist Party of China to fight the Japanese. When the War ended the Kuomingtang immediately opened up a series of attacks on the Communist Party. However, the kuomingtang did not have the necessary support of the people and thus the attacks failed. Soon the Kuomingtang was forced to abandon the mainland and seek shelter on Formosa where they established the state called “Nationalist China.”The articles in this fourth volume immerse one in the struggle in China during the four short years between 1945 and 1949. It was a revelation to me that the Kuomingtang was so unpopular with the Chines public. Additionally, many of America’s own advisors to the Kuomingtang itself were aware of the box that the Kuomingtang was getting itself into from which it would not return, merely because they would not fight the Japanese and preferred to save all their arms for the fight against the Communist Party when the war ended. American General Joseph Stillwell was one of the leading American critics of the Kuomingtang;s lack of cooperation during the Second World War.
