Description
How can fundamental particles exist as waves in the vacuum? How can such waves have particle properties such as inertia? What is behind the notion of “virtual” particles? Why and how do particles exert forces on one another? Not least: What are forces anyway? These are some of the central questions that have intriguing answers in Quantum Field Theory and the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Unfortunately, these theories are highly mathematical, so that most people – even many scientists – are not able to fully grasp their meaning. This book unravels these theories in a conceptual manner, using more than 180 figures and extensive explanations and will provide the nonspecialist with great insights that are not to be found in the popular science literature.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Did anyone edit this book? There are grammatical errors, misspellings, and malapropisms in every other sentence.
⭐After reading several of the mathematically intensive books on QFT this book gave wonderful conceptual understanding where equations failed to explain. Physics should be beautiful and the author’s discussions on QED definitely show that beauty.
⭐Higher level physics gets too absorbed into the mathematics and sometimes we miss the ideas. This book is great for anyone, even if you don’t have a solid background in math.
⭐Conceptually, it is an amazing book. Many deep insights into the nature of quantum field theory is offered with no mathematics. The presentation is excellent and intuitive and concepts are presented in good order.Editorially, however, it could’ve used some. There are many small – albeit inconsequential – grammatical and typographical errors throughout. Do not let this deter you from purchasing the book though. It’s price tag is worth it for the depth and degree to which it goes into its subject material. If you want to have a deeper understanding of quantum field theory that goes much deeper than “popular” attempts but are weary of mathematics than this book deserves a place on your shelf.Five stars for a proper edit!
⭐Es un buen libro pero el texto resulta algo premioso y requiere tiempo que dedicar a su lectura cuidadosa. Recomendable para lectores que cuentan con ese tiempo excedente.
