Description

This book takes a pedagogical approach to explaining quantum gravity, supersymmetry and string theory in a coherent way. It is aimed at graduate students and researchers in quantum field theory and high-energy physics. The first part of the book introduces quantum gravity, without requiring previous knowledge of general relativity (GR). The necessary geometrical aspects are derived afresh leading to explicit general Lagrangians for gravity, including that of general relativity. The quantum aspect of gravitation, as described by the graviton, is introduced and perturbative quantum GR is discussed. The Schwinger-DeWitt formalism is developed to compute the one-loop contribution to the theory and renormalizability aspects of the perturbative theory are also discussed. This follows by introducing only the very basics of a non-perturbative, background-independent, formulation of quantum gravity, referred to as ā€œloop quantum gravityā€, which gives rise to a quantization of space. In the second part the author introduces supersymmetry and its consequences. The generation of superfields is represented in detail. Supersymmetric generalizations of Maxwell’s Theory as well as of Yang-Mills field theory, and of the standard model are worked out. Spontaneous symmetry breaking, improvement of the divergence problem in supersymmetric field theory, and its role in the hierarchy problem are covered. The unification of the fundamental constants in a supersymmetric version of the standard model are then studied. Geometrical aspects necessary to study supergravity are developed culminating in the derivation of its full action. The third part introduces string theory and the analysis of the spectra of the mass (squared) operator associated with the oscillating strings. The properties of the underlying fields, associated with massless particles, encountered in string theory are studied in some detail. Elements of compactification, duality and D-branes are given, as well of the generation of vertices and interactions of strings. In the final sections, the author shows how to recover GR and the Yang-Mills field Theory from string theory.

⭐item purchased for my daughter – seems authoritative in that subject.

⭐***** QFT II : Outstanding Comprehensive Textbook. Includes Solutions to the ProblemsI highly recommend this outstanding and pedagogical textbook on quantum gravity, supersymmetry and string theory. It is the best there is. Some of the highlights are: -No previous knowledge of GR required. -The Schwinger-DeWitt technique. -The graviton and one loop and two loops contributions to perturbative QGR.-Renormalizability aspects of QGR and higher derivatives gravitational theories. -Proof of the Euler-PoincarĆ© Characteristic Theorem. -Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of black holes. -Invariant products of three Riemann tensors. -“Loop Quantum Gravity”: a QFT in 3D, and space quantization. – Superspace, invariant integration, panorama of superfields, including the pure vector superfield. -Improvement of the divergence problem in quantum field theory, spontaneous symmetry breaking. – Supersymmetric extensions of field theories including of the standard model. -Unifications of couplings. -Derivation of the full supergravity action and of its underlying geometry -String theory: a quantum field theory on worldsheets traced by strings. – Bosonic and superstrings, D branes, elements of compactification and duality. -Types and mass spectra of strings. -All the massless fields in string theory and their associated degrees of freedom. -Basics of vertices, interactions and scattering of strings. – From string theory to Einstein’s GR and to Yang-Mills field theories.

⭐An excellent graduate level student-friendly and a good one for theoretical physicist textbook which I strongly recommend. It is comprehensive, “up-to-date” with detailed derivations.

⭐Head and shoulders above the rest in all these modern developments. The comprehensiveness, the clarity of the presentations, the treatment of loop quantum gravity, the complete derivation of the supergravity action, as well as the derivation which shows how general relativity and the Yang-Mills field theories may be obtained directly from string theory, and the explicit expression of the pure vector superfield should be noted. The fact that no previous knowledge of general relativity is required and that the solutions of the problems are right in the book should be also mentioned. A highly recommended text book.

⭐A highly recommended readable and clear textbook on intricacies of quantum gravity, supersymmetry and string theory.

⭐Highly recommended for those who wish to learn and master these modern developments in a reasonable short time. As a bonus, solutions to the problems are also included.

⭐Good!!!

⭐Tiene la formalidad en el desarrollo de los temas (por mi formación matemÔtica) que requiero para mis necesidades en el doctorado.
