In this undergraduate textbook, the author develops the quantum theory from first principles based on very simple experiments: a photon travelling through beam splitters to detectors, an electron moving through a Stern-Gerlach machine, and an atom emitting radiation. From the physical description of these experiments follows a natural mathematical description in terms of matrices and complex numbers. The first part of the book examines how experimental facts force us to let go of some deeply held preconceptions and develops this idea into a mathematical description of states, probabilities, observables, and time evolution using physical applications. The second part of the book explores more advanced topics, including the concept of entanglement, the process of decoherence, and extension of the quantum theory to the situation of a particle in a one-dimensional box. Here, the text makes contact with more traditional treatments of quantum mechanics. The remaining chapters delve deeply into the idea of uncertainty relations and explore what the quantum theory says about the nature of reality. The book is an ideal and accessible introduction to quantum physics, with modern examples and helpful end-of-chapter exercises.

About the Author Pieter Kok is a Reader in Quantum Information Theory at the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. His research interests include quantum information theory and quantum precision measurements. He studied physics at Utrecht University in the Netherlands and received his PhD in quantum teleportation from the University of Wales in 2001. He has contributed to practical architectures for quantum computing, and Heisenberg-limited quantum metrology and imaging.

⭐Il merito di questo libro, scritto in modo piano e convincente, è un giusto bilanciamento fra ragionamenti e formule matematiche, fra descrizione di esperimenti ed esposizione di teorie, con il risultato finale di avvincere il lettore ed incuriosirlo sempre più.L’approccio seguito è tra l’altro particolarmente adatto alla natura stessa della meccanica quantistica, che vede la ….sovrapposizione (è il caso di dirlo!) di impostazioni e metodologie di calcolo estremamente pragmatiche e precise nei risultati con un “ombrello” di fenomeni fisici e teorie astratti, non derivabili cioè dalle nostre esperienze quotidiane nel mondo “classico” nel quale viviamo.Il libro può interessare, oltre che agli studenti universitari per i quali è stato scritto, anche ad insegnanti di fisica ed a laureati in discipline tecnico/scientifiche appassionati di fisica. Io, per esempio, sono ingegnere ed ho 87 anni.Have to say this is probably the worst textbook I have ever seen (would have given this zero ratings if I could).First and foremost, diagrams and figures are lacking in detail. From the very first chapter, the figures aren’t labelled at all. For instance, the Mach-Zehnder Interferometer figure has two detectors, D1 and D2. Yet, it is never labelled at all but is often referred back to in later sections. In addition, no other parts of that figure is labelled at all.Second, I noticed that there are rarely any examples provided in the book.Third, you can try to do the exercises listed at the back of the chapter but not even half of the answers are provided. For example, you may have a total of 16 end-of-chapter exercises but only 6 exercises have answers provided at the back of the book for that chapter. Sometimes, the author only gives you 2 answers to the 16 total questions. This is really discouraging…Lastly, the simulations are also not accessible even if you bought the book.Would recommend if you are reading this for general, non-study purpose. Otherwise, don’t bother buying this book.
