User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I find this book lacks explanation at many points, to where I couldn’t understand thw way the author presented a problem, a subject, etc… I almost feel like the target audience is to other college professors, and not students of the subject. I also don’t like that a lot of the harder problems at the end of the sections are even numbered, so that you don’t have a way to see how they are worked. I don’t really feel the book warrants just one star, but since most people in my class don’t care much for the book, I am confused to all of the great reviews on this web site and felt I needed to show the contrast that my class experienced with it. I think the book requires a good instructor to help you get through it, in contrast to the comments to others who have said it’s good for a self learner. I am also enrolled in Calculus 2 and Linear Algebra, and the books I am using for those courses are FAR superior to this one. and I have missed a few class sessions in those two courses and am still running a high B and a mid A in those courses. I wouldn’t dream of missing a class in the Discrete Math class because I feel too dependant on the instructor’s explanations.
⭐To begin, I have absolutely no experience with discrete math and generally learn through doing a lot of practice problems. This book is the book our professor is using for our discrete math class and it is atrocious. While it has a a lot of examples, they cover the bare basics and don’t go into enough detail to then understand what you need to do for later problems or even the early problems. The author uses the cop out of “you need to use creativity to solve some of these problems,” to cover his tracks and not just accept that he is lazy and is not going into enough detail to really understand the problems. This means you’ll just get a whole bunch of problems wrong in the process of learning and will eventually run out of problems to practice because after looking at the answer, the problems lose their ability to test your understanding. Or even worse, somethings are not highlighted in a very clear manner (for the sake of being “concise”) leading to severe frustration when you in essence have to basically learn discrete math by trying every option under the sun. If you’re a discrete math prodigy and can learn through one reading of the material, then you may find this book good, but for the rest of us who have to work for our knowledge, this book is about as pleasurable as eating one ton of bear poop, while getting your eyes gouged and taking roundhouse kicks from Chuck Norris.
⭐First of all, I gotta compliment the seller with the fast shipping! at least that is a plus! But everything about the book itself turned out to be unexpected in a bad way.1. As i bought the paperback as “new”, i expected it to be “new”. Receiving the item it turned out the be used and dirty. Not only was it bulky (first, i thought it was because of the harsh shipping) but then the pages inside also was dirty! Certainly not in an condition to be tagged as “new”.2. The book itself is really messy and the layout could have been done in a much better way, I am totally getting headaches from trying to learn from this. The pages is of a bad quality, and there is no colours, which makes it seem copied and fake.3. I recently bought a school book from ebay, and this one turned out to be in a much more splendid shape. I recommend everyone to rather buy ur books from ebay.
⭐The math professors at the university recommended this book, in addition to the main textbook for the class. I can’t say it was useful at all.It is a great book if you already are an expert on the material, otherwise you’re wasting your time(and money).
⭐Great price and quick delivery!
⭐I would rent this book again if necessary. It will do wonders for people taking Discrete Structures — the mathematics class.
⭐Perfect
⭐Gives a good overview of abstract mathematics in a very well presented fashion. Gives an introduction and some practice applying first order logic, set theory, algebras, solutions to recurrence equations, and more. It really has nothing to do with computer science and makes no attempt to show anything about it, as any language is just a language.
⭐This is one of the best books on the subject, explanations are very clear and a huge number of examples are provided. This book can be very useful as a reference and for developing a deep understanding of the subject.I bought a used copy which was in condition and only a couple of pages from the front were torn out, otherwise the condition was pretty good.
⭐ Preferable=============1.Who want to get cleared with their doubts in that subject , can refer this book ( ).2.Even though I got this book with some damaged pages, easily readable , for that 4 stars
⭐This is a very good book for beginners at discrete mathematics. Many first year courses in discrete math usually focus on two or three major topics: combinatorics and finite automata, recurrence and generating functions, and graph theory. The good thing about this book it that it covers all of it in good detail for a undergrad course. Therefore the professor has the option of picking the material he thinks will be interesting or maybe easier to understand for the students from a vast collection of topics (with many exercises). The exercises also include some which are related to programming/cs and so the book is also good for cs students. There’s also a section at the end which includes modern discrete mathematics which is more or less a bit of abstract algebra(modular arithmetic, rings, fields) and groups with various applications to modern fields such as cryptography, networks, digital switches, and more “mathy” applications such as latin squares and finite fields. The cons of this book is that it’s quite large and heavy(over 800 pages), and it is quite pricy, but it makes up for it by having a good structure exercises of various difficulties. (so it’s not perfect but it’s quite good, hence the 4 star rating)Overall this is a worthy purchase for a first year student who wants to find out what discrete math is, or a professor who wants a large book full of different topics which are not at a too high level while at the same time being challenging enough for a 1st or 2nd year course.
⭐Concepts and proofs are written in a very logical and mathematical way, but that’s it: it doesn’t explain the concepts and proofs well. This is not a book for self-study, but OK for courses if you can get direct help from instructors or TAs.
⭐Good product But some pages are not present,But remaining pages are in good condition
