    Description

The aim of this work is to provide a proof of the nonlinear gravitational stability of the Minkowski space-time. More precisely, the book offers a constructive proof of global, smooth solutions to the Einstein Vacuum Equations, which look, in the large, like the Minkowski space-time. In particular, these solutions are free of black holes and singularities. The work contains a detailed description of the sense in which these solutions are close to the Minkowski space-time, in all directions. It thus provides the mathematical framework in which we can give a rigorous derivation of the laws of gravitation proposed by Bondi. Moreover, it establishes other important conclusions concerning the nonlinear character of gravitational radiation. The authors obtain their solutions as dynamic developments of all initial data sets, which are close, in a precise manner, to the flat initial data set corresponding to the Minkowski space-time. They thus establish the global dynamic stability of the latter.Originally published in 1994.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

    User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The methods are a modernization and update on what has been done on the Millennium problem on the stability of the Navier Stokes Problem. The influence of the methods of Charles Fefferman are clear. The application is general and broad and completely answers the stability question for Minkowski Space.

⭐While the authors did generate a significant and historically important physical/mathematical result in this book, this edition is rife with the same typographic errors that were present in the 1984 edition (missing/misplaced tildes, bars, etc.) and the physical quality of the book is VERY low.It seems like this book was printed with a half-full toner cartridge and the reject binding machine that has a gripe against being stuck in the second-string “print-on-demand” assembly line. The dots over i’s are difficult to discern on many pages throughout the book, as well as discerning between the many tildes, hats, bars and other miscellaneous mathematical notation that CK had to employ in the process of writing this epic. Some pages are fine, but the content is dense and technical enough that one does not need the typography impeding the process. After getting a loan from another university library for this book the original 1984 edition was nicely printed and easy to read. That said, I would have also expected some corrections in a reprint – scanning a few pages of the introduction yielded 4 typos that were present in other pre-print papers on the internet by the authors. While it is possible to unravel some of the errors, as stated above the content is dense enough that corrections are sorely needed – you’re never sure if you don’t understand or it’s an error in the text.Overall: an unpleasant, yet unfortunately necessary, purchase. Thanks Amazon for at least printing it. :’-(
