User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I was gravely, almost instantaneously, disappointed with this book…not at all what I expected. I suppose I let the ‘attractive’ title and snazzy cover design get the best of me? Because at the Amazon prime price of $15.96 it really is not justifiable. The problem with this book–and with most of these types of books, that try and sell you these “new” and “revolutionary” techniques that will promise to revamp and change your practice forever–is that a lot of what they contain can be arrived at through simple and intuitive self-experimentation. A lot of what’s in this book, and others like Nany Reyner’s “Acrylics Revolution” and Patti Brady’s “Rethinking Acrylics” is just the same old recycled material. Anyone that uses acrylic paints and gels is already keenly aware of their strength and potential for breaching beyond traditional uses and applications. You don’t need this book to tell you that. There is nothing “new” about this, it is not a “must have resource” or a “great reference for any crafters”…about the only thing it is is expensive. You can easily gleam any of these techniques for free off the web.(The first 20 pages talks about the basics, paints, mediums, tools, and very rudimentary things like stretching paper, sealing and priming wood panels, and canvas, nothing special.)Here’s a list of the techniques included, FYI there are only 20:1. Palimpsest: Creating A Richly Textured Surface By Making Shapes and Then Wiping Them Partly Away2. Tiny Bubbles: Using Liquid Soap to Create A Frothy Texture (“For this technique, fluid acrylic colors are mixed with a small amount of liquid soap to create a sudsy mixture that dries to form an interestingly textured surface.”)3. Acrylics and Watercolor: Using Acrylic On Absorbent Surfaces To Mimic Watercolor Effects4. Hard Edge: Using Sealed Masking Tape to Get Crisp, Clean Edges5. Wrinkled Rice Paper: Creating Texture Using An Age-Old Material6. Marbling: Creating A Modern Adaptation Of An Ancient Process7. Carbon Transfer: Using Acrylic Medium To Print Back-And-White Images Onto Canvas Or Panel8. Skins: Making Reusable Acrylic Sheets9. Salt Effect: Using A Common Ingredient For A Dramatic Impact10. Spraying: Using A Solvent-FREE Alternative To Conventional Spray Paint11. Crayon Resist: Using Common Crayons To Create Patterns In Fluid Washes Of Color12. Sand Surface: Creating Texture With a Common Material13. Acrylic as Ground For Charcoal and Pastel: Using Acrylic To Create Toothy Surfaces14. Sgraffito: Unearthing Layers Below15. Text AS Texture: Using Newspaper And Magazine Text To Create Textural Surfaces16. Digital Ground: Using Digital Ground To Print On Acrylic Skins17. Patterned Fabric: Getting A Head Start Using Existing Patterns18. Cellophane Texture: Create A Jagged Impression19. Rubbing Alcohol: Causing A Chemical Reaction20. Blotting: Creating Textures By Partially Removing Paint With Water And NewsprintThe last part of the book concludes with a Gallery–19 plates–of work showing a conglomerate, hence FUSION, of the already fleshed out techniques.

⭐Really good basic techniques to get started with are here. New acrylic products I didn’t know about are well defined and will be fun to explore. Great illustrations. Although I thought the artistic style was limited, it did make it easy to tell what effect the techniques had.

⭐This book clearly and directly teaches several techniques to use with acrylic paints to get various textures and visual effects. Highly recommended.

⭐What it does is teach new ways of painting. I learned somethings from this book. And I’d recommend it to any artist wanting to stay on the edge and produce paintings that sell.

⭐I love this book for sparking my imagination and allowing me to explore new uses for acrylics. Especially helpful were the author’s artistic uses of the techniques featured in the book at the end of the book. I recommend this for anyone who has run short of ideas for painting.

⭐Good on instruction, clear and concise. Perfect Choice for my library. I was able to apply knowledge instantly.Happy with Book

⭐Good book….gives you basic ideas on clever tricks with acrylics and mixed media

⭐This book was one of the most well-written books I have read. The exercises are easy to follow and organized. Great book for taking his class while in your studio. I highly recommend it!

⭐I bought this book I have attempted almost every technique in it – all great fun though personally i didnt like the salt results . I took it into college and my tutor enjoyed it so much she too bought a copy. I am a bit of a acrylic paint addict but alot of the techniques in the book could be applied to oil paints and even watercolours. I use the skills i gathered from this book to create some intesting patterns which i either printed on to or used as book covers. I would recommend this book to all ability ranges. oh and if you do buy it and are confused where to get some of the key ingredients —For distilled water go to halfords and isoalchol is availiable from chemists neither cost very much.

⭐I am really disappointed by this book, only very basic techniques (marbling, blotting… come on!), might be good for complete beginners but not if you have some experience with acrylics.A “unique reference book…”, “push beyond traditional techniques…” I don’t agree!A waste of money.

⭐Interesting ideas, lots to learn, well presented, good buy.

⭐Disappointed.

⭐HiThis book has proved inspirational to my 15 year old who was floundering and wondering if Art was still “for her”.The ideas are clearly explained and the photos are clear and relevant. I am not an artist but I even felt inspired after just looking through the pages. Thank you. You have written a great book.
