Description
Understanding the way in which large-scale structures such as galaxies form remains the most challenging problem in cosmology today. This text provides an up-to-date and pedagogical introduction to this exciting area of research. Part 1 deals with the Friedmann model, the thermal history of the universe, and includes a description of observed structures in the universe. Part 2 describes the theory of gravitational instability in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. This part also includes chapters on the microwave background radiation, Large-scale velocity fields, quasars, and high redshift objects. Part 3 of the book covers inflation, cosmic strings, and dark matter. Each chapter is accompanied by a comprehensive set of exercises to help the reader in self-study.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review ‘Padmanabhan has written an invaluable exposition from first physical principles of almost all the things that a new graduate student embarking upon research in theoretical cosmology needs to know … A unique feature, for a book at this level, is the extensive collection of advanced problems at the end of each chapter … Overall, I found Padmanabhan’s book to be an extremely useful working text that covers most of the topics at the research frontier.’ Prof. John Barrow, The Times Higher Education Supplement’This highly readable book gives an excellent exposition of the ideas and methods required up to now, to carry through the programme of modelling structure formation in the universe … the main points and the key ideas are presented in a form that should not date rapidly. The author is to be congratulated on achieving this difficult task.’ Classical and Quantum Gravity’ … destined to become a classic of its kind.’ New Scientist Book Description This text provides an up-to-date and pedagogical introduction to this exciting area of research.

⭐This was one of my important sources in learning Structure Formation. Main advantage of this book is the detailed calculations. Topics on which other books tend to be very sketchy are presented elaborately here. There are good collections of problems behind each chapter but I found most of them hard back then. In spite of it being detailed there was something lacking in the book (organization ?). I had to read Malcolm Longair’s Galaxy Formation and Kolb & Turner’s Early Universe to get a complete picture. I have read only the first two parts and not read the third part. Though not the best it was certainly very useful because of the detailed calculations.
⭐Very dense with all the information you need to know. But you have to work through some algebra to get most of the book. Since the derivations are brief for most cases. One should know what he or she doing when referring to this book. But in the mean time I have seen some of the derivations that I never seen in any other book. I am working pretty much in the field of cosmology. And had to read lots and lots of cosmology books. This book has been a reference for lots of modern books for sure.
⭐I used this book when taking cosmology lectures. Then I already mastered the principles of general relativity and advanced quantum theory. Nevertheless, I found the book still too advanced for self study. For this book to be useful, or to enjoy this book, one should already be very familiar with the subject.Perhaps the book could be useful for reference purposes since it does contain a lot of information. Because everything is so densely packed and not very clearly presented, I found it not useful for a first acquantaince with the subject. And certainly not for beginners. Now, five years later, it is still in my book shelf, but I have never looked into it again. A slight disappointment for me, also because it is not cheap. My advice to those who are doubting, check it out in the library.
