User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Honestly, I hardly ever read the textbooks assigned in classes. This is the one that I did read and enjoyed to read. I found it interesting and it really went along well with my lecture material. There are points in the text where the author gets into the math side of astronomy in detail, but if its something you don’t understand, you can skim it or skip over it and still not be totally lost in the text.

⭐I enjoyed this book which was pitched at the level of a numerate amateur. Enjoyed the non-advanced mathematical approach but if I have a criticism, it’s that the book was originally published over 12 years ago and is a little out-of-date in respect to planetary science. Various interplanetary probes have reported back since it was originally published and advanced our knowledge, which isn’t reflected in the book.

⭐Suddenly I decided that I should brush up on my astronomy. I had been reading some back ground books on the subject, but wanted to go deeper into the subject.I searched the web and finally honed in on this book on Amazon. i reviewed the contents and some of the text and decided it looked as though it would help. It is also a recent publication and my earlier book was published in 1999 and I knew this was well out of date. This book was published in 2011 and was the latest book I could find which went into the depth I was seeking. It arrived today and already it has opened up my mind to thoroughly understand the celestial sphere and the use of clocks and timing in astronomy. It clearly shows the way that the earlier scientists achieved their results and clearly shows the patience which one must have to follow through in astronomy.I am very close to retirement and hope that this book will encourage me to develop and even better understanding of cosmology and be better able to observe the stars in the sky – as long as I can get away from city lights!Thank you for a great text, I can thoroughly recommend it for a good introduction to astronomy and cosmology. As the science is rapidly changing I expect that future updates on my understanding will be through searches on the internet as books will take longer to produce and it is possible that they are out of date before they are published. But this is certainly not the case for this book which gives a thorough grounding in the basic principles.

⭐This is a very readable text with well-chosen content and is intended for first year physics and astronomy undergraduates for whom I would regard it as eminently suitable. My only niggle is that there are far too many trivial errors which should have been spotted by a proof-reader. The website purporting to list errors only does so for a few chapters and is in no way up to date in this respect. I will be submitting my own list when I have finished the book. I have the 2009 reprint.I would regard this as essential reading for teachers at school level who teach Advancing Physics as it fleshes out many of the topics that receive a rather more superficial treatment at that level.

⭐This book was a pleasure to read. It satisfies the level of student it is aimed at, It’s good to see that the author didn’t shy away from including some maths, and I particularly liked some of the details about telescopes.Next time I get a student taking the astronomy A-level option I will recommend this book to them, as it’s far, far better than the feeble efforts of the secondary school teachers who write the A-level texts.

⭐Fabulous first text. very high quality paper/printing. The book is not overly mathematical – very accessible for both science and non-science students.I use this book with my IB Higher students who are doing the astronomy option. Provides good detail which is very clearly explained at a level they can understand. would recommend to any IB Physics teacher for their library and/or their schools’ library as a supplement to the (rather limited) text IB books around.
