Description
This innovative physics textbook intended for science and engineering majors develops classical mechanics from a historical perspective. The presentation of the standard course material includes a discussion of the thought processes of the discoverers and a description of the methods by which they arrived at their theories. However the presentation proceeds logically rather than strictly chronologically, so new concepts are introduced at the natural moment. The book assumes a familiarity with calculus, includes a discussion of rigid body motion, and contains numerous thought-provoking problems. It is largely based in content on The Mechanical Universe: Introduction to Mechanics and Heat, a book designed in conjunction with a tele-course to be offered by PBS in the Fall of 1985. The advanced edition, however, does not coincide exactly with the video lessons, contains additional material, and develops the fundamental ideas introduced in the lower-level edition to a greater degree.

⭐So I’ve just gotten this book earlier today and read the first few chapters. I’m currently taking the mechanics course (engineering undergrad btw). The book explains well but since I’m not really into the history of how the laws or theories are formed, I just skim through them. The book gives quite a few examples. However, I believe resnick and Halliday book is better if you want more practice or exercise. I personally bought this book so as I understand things better (I didn’t take physics in high school, so I’m struggling right now in my class) even though my professor uses Physics 4th edition by resnick and Halliday (very old book; not Fundamentals of Physics). But I think, for theory, this book is good. However, don’t forget to see the edition. Wanted to buy the latest edition but end up buying the older edition ‘ and so, I got confused in the numbers like the gravity it’s not 9.8 or 10 but 6 something –” (or maybe I read it wrong) well, anyway, it is still a good book.
⭐This is from the Mechanical Universe which goes with the Mechanical universe laser discs, and vhs and dvd series with Annenberg and California Institute of Technology.Really boring piece of material unless you can apply it. It was once broadcast on PBS , and corporation for public broadcasting. I saw it for myself in 1987. This will someday go in a Museum, but until then I’ll probably learn with it.If you don’t like technical things, you probably wouldn’t appreciate this. If you love mathematics and it’s applications, this is a nice thing to go in your library. Although it tells more math formulas rather than explaining why the mathematics works in simple language, it is in common modern language.
⭐I saw the excellent Mechanical Universe Television series while I was in high school and I recently purchased this book. I’ve just finished reading this book and am simultaneously doing problems in Schaum 3000 Physics problems. This is a great reader to use as it puts the physics in the historical context and traces the reasoning these great scientists used in inducing their conclusions in the first place. The explanations are mostly very clear. Some of the historical interpretations are questionable but they do not detract from the overall value of the historical approach. This is how all physics should be taught.
⭐I expected it to all be in one volume. The second half is way more expense. Still thrilled to posses this treasure and it is better than I expected in content. Very affordable. Hope to find Beyond volume at the same price someday.
⭐The used book was in very good condition. It was just an older edition than we were looking for. Customer Service was able to help me work through the problem and resolve the situation with no problems. I wouldn’t hesitate to use this site again.
⭐Wonderful approach into classical mechanics and heat. It really explains how the physics equations came to be and the thought process of the physicists.
⭐In perfect condition. I would love it more if physics wasn’t such a hard subject to learn.
⭐Very good service. /excellent exposition and photos printed. Good text. Mathematics levels are acceptable andthe physics lessons follow history.
⭐good book, perhaps lacking in exercises though
⭐ce livre vulgarise très bien les sciences physiques et les mathématiques qui vont avec et fait le lien avec l’histoire.
