This book describes some of the frontier problems of cosmology: our almost total ignorance of what the Universe is made up of, the mystery of its origin and its end. The book starts with a description of the historical events that led to the construction of the Big Bang model together with the stages that transformed the Universe from a very hot place to a very cold one, full with the structures that we observe today. These structures (stars, galaxies, etc.) constitute only 5% of the contents of the Universe. Concerning the remaining 95%, dubbed dark matter and dark energy, we know very little, and we have only indirect evidence of their existence. The text describes the story and the protagonists who showed the need for the existence of this ‘missing matter’, the observations, and puzzles they had to solve to understand that dark matter was not ordinary matter. The book describes the hunt for dark matter, carried out with instruments operating in space, on the Earth’s surface, and in laboratories built in the bowels of the Earth. It also describes dark energy, which manifests itself in the accelerated expansion of the Universe, and appeared only a few billions of years ago. The book discusses why dark energy must exist and what its existence implies, especially for the future and the end of our Universe.

⭐The book was well written, covering very complex facts about the universe that we non-scientists need to know.

⭐I like to keep up with cosmology and astrophysics so I read two or three books a year on the subject. I learned more from this one than from several others in the past year or two. If you’re technical enough to get through some basic concepts of physics (especially particle physics), you should be able to understand the content. There is no math but this is not for non-technical readers.Be ready for some quirks, as the author is a native speaker of Italian and his English is full of grammatical mistakes and odd phrasing. This occurs on every page but once you get used to it, you can overlook it. I also had to wonder about what he chose to leave in and what he chose to leave out. For instance, why have the first call-out box explain powers of ten when the rest of the book is clearly written for people who are well beyond that?Quibbles aside, if you want to keep up with the latest in dark matter and dark energy and you’re not a beginner, I recommend this book as the one to read. If you are new to the field, you need to look elsewhere.

⭐ORIENTACIÓN: Libro de 2021, por lo que nos presenta una visión actual de los temas que incluye. Inicia con una descripción, sin mucha extensión, de la teoría del Big Bang, características del Universo Primordial y del modelo Estándar de partículas, para adentrarse, ya con profundidad (divulgativa), en los principales temas objeto del libro, como son la materia oscura y la energía oscura, para terminar en su último capítulo con el final esperado para nuestro Universo de acuerdo a diferentes modelos, la mayoría inviables desde el conocimiento actual de nuestro universo. En la descripción de esos principales temas, va introduciendo explicaciones necesarias sobre otros hechos cosmológicos como CMB, simetría, supersimetría, supercuerdas, supernovas, varios principios, etc. Para ciertos temas como Inflación, Mecanismo de Higgs, formación de estructuras y masa del neutrino incluye apéndices finales que recogen una descripción más detallada de estos temas. Tan solo una fórmula (una de las principales de la Física) E=mc2.OPINIÓN: Un libro interesante, sencillo de leer y entender (con base sobre los temas tratados, mejor). Los temas incluidos lo son con suficiente (y gran) exposición (divulgación). Valiente y claro cuando habla de la teoría de supercuerdas o de la Teoría M. (¿Por cierto Witten, cuando nos dirás que significa la “M”?). Incluye bibliografía e Índice alfabético. Letra de tamaño aceptable y correcto en descripción y formato. Tuve que esperar a recibir el libro por ser recientemente editado y tan solo se vendía en e-book o tapa dura (Amazón), por lo que lo compré en esta última, con un precio de 83,29€. Pensaba que el libro tendría un formato, papel y fotografías excepcionales y resultó una impresión normal, con unas decenas de gramos más de pasta de papel y un precio más de 50€ sobre el de tapa blanda (que ya existe). Me gustaría saber en qué empleé esos +50€.Me permito una generalidad, por si fuera interesante para algún lector, mencionando, bajo mi criterio, los mejores libros de física y cosmología leídos: Las dudas de la Física del S.
