⭐The author covers such a wide range of topics that the reader finds himself checking various chapters to make sure that they weren’t each written by a different contributor! This book is for the reader who already finds graduate level treatments of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory approachable.Beginning with a quick survey of the underpinnings of classical physics in terms of Hamilton’s principle and Lagrangrian mechanics, the author moves rapidly through wave mechanics, the Schrodinger equation, and matrix mechanics. The author does a particularly nice job summing up Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen’s (EPR) challenge to Bohr’s Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics, culminating in the Bell inequalities and the Aspect Experiment. A very brief nod is given to the concept of decoherence and its role in the collapse of the wave function–although this topic is not treated in sufficient detail for my taste. Nevertheless, a link is provided between the decoherence and many world views of quantum mechanics that proves to be elucidating to the reader.Angular momentum and spin statistics are also addressed, as are scattering and perturbation theory. Quantum field theory is outlined, both in terms of path integrals and the canonical approach. A chapter on general relativity is also included.For me, Elbaz’s book has proved a pleasant way to integrate my understanding of a wide range of quantum topics, as well as introduce me to a few new ones.
