⭐I ordered this textbook for a course on Systems of ODEs that I recently took. When I first started flipping through the book, I got a little nervous because the style of the book is definitely more conversational than I’m used to. This is not a “definition-proposition-theorem-corollary” type of book, where the chain of logic is set out for the reader. I normally prefer the “chain of logic” style because it gives an outline of how to get to a result. At first I struggled with adjusting to the style, but once I adjusted I loved this book.I thought the conversational style would hinder me, but instead it made me think more deeply about the material. The style forces the reader to come up with the chain of logic themselves, which is a good ability to develop if you intend to move on to research. You get some very basic parameters on how to deal with the material from the authours, and then you have to build your chain of logic around that. I felt like I was able to develop a more personal approach to the subject as opposed to being forced to develop the authours’ prescribed approach. I feel this will actually benefit me more in the long term.There’s a lot of emphasis on the 2-dimensonal case, which is good for developing intuition, but higher dimensional cases are definitely covered.If you’re looking for a strong, thorough treatment on the subject that’s accessible to advanced undergrads and doesn’t “hold your hand” through the material, this is an excellent book. I left the course feeling very confident in my abilities to tackle ODEs in a more abstract setting. In the end, I feel that’s the mark of a good textbook: leaving the reader with a high level of confidence in understanding of the material and in ability to use the material in future courses/research.

⭐This book is a great balance of concrete examples and general results. It’s proven very useful for independent study and is almost entirely self contained. It would have been nice to have separate existence and uniqueness proofs in chapter 17 but the proof provided is sufficient and decent to read.

⭐I often found myself wishing for a more structured approach to the topics covered in the book. In many early chapters key points are introduced in examples rather than as theorems or propositions or the like. It did provide some nice intuition, but overall I’d recommend getting a more “traditional” book on the subject as well if you get assigned this book for a class.

⭐First off, Great book. NOT a easy book to follow by any means, but decent in its own right.Oh thats right, what am I reviewing, It arrived relatively quickly, and was in excellent shape.

⭐This review is about the Kindle edition only. The equations are very faint and some symbols cannot be made out. Buy the Hardcover edition instead.

⭐As others have said, the kindle version compresses the equations and symbols to the point that they’re nearly illegible. As I understand it, Amazon charges the publisher some ridonkulous fee for the size of their images, so they have to compress them this much. So blame is on Amazon. Also, the kindle app is just terrible. Half-baked nonsense. But the content of the book is decent. I mean, no upper-level math book is particularly good at explaining things clearly. But this one is above average as far as advanced math books go.

⭐I read this book quicker than I wanted to. It will be a wonderful resource to come back with the explorations and the exercises. As such this review pertains to reading rather than getting the most out of this book. This limitation aside, this is a very clearly written and illustrated book.There is a progressive increase in complexity proceeding from one dimensional linear autonomous differential equations, to linearisation of non-linear equation, qualitative assessments through analysis of equilibrium points, Poincare maps. The section introducing chaos (focussing on hallmarks of density of periodic orbits, transitivity and sensitivity to initial conditions) is very interesting. I found the chaotic behaviour of logistic map and relation (homeomorphism) to Cantor sets very interesting.It is a very good textbook and I look forward to a time when I can maximize my learning by diving into the explorations (esp. with Mathematica).

⭐Not that the content is bad. But I had another expectation, since I regarded it (maybe unfairly) as a successor to the original Smale/Hirsch book. And with Devaney added, it couldn’t possibly be bad. And it isn’t. But not very much beyond high school level.

⭐Good book for begineer…got in time
