Description

The aim of this Book is to give an overview, based on the results of nearly three decades of intensive research, of transient chaos. One belief that motivates us to write this book is that, transient chaos may not have been appreciated even within the nonlinear-science community, let alone other scientific disciplines.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I’m a beginner and find out that it is extremely useful to follow basic concepts and ideas in the field. Examples and case studies in the book are very instructive and selective. Overall, this book is comprehensive and systematic as well. I recommend it five stars!

⭐This is an excellent comprehensive monograph on transient chaos. The authors well succeeded to demonstrate the importance of complex transients in diverse scientific disciplines, whether it is species extinction in ecology, transient turbulence in shear flow, quantum chaotic scattering in nanoscience, shimmying wheels in engineering, or the spreading of pollutants in the environment, etc. The book starts with introducing the basic mathematical concepts and necessary computational algorithms for characterizing transient chaos in low-dimensional systems. Further topics relate transient chaos to bifurcations, chaotic scattering, high-dimensional and spatiotemporal dynamics, chaotic advection, control, and time series analysis. Throughout the book, profound mathematical concepts are presented together with meaningful examples and clear figures such that the book is very useful for graduate students and researchers with both, beginning and more advanced knowledge in nonlinear dynamics. This book with its extensive list of references is an invaluable resource for every researcher interested in complex dynamical systems across disciplines.

⭐This is an extensive and up to date review of the field of transient chaos. It assumes a basic knowledge of dynamical systems and as such it is indicated for graduate students and scientists that are either working in the field or interested in applying the concepts of transient chaos to specific problems. Indeed, one of the main strengths of the book is that it introduces the mathematical formalism with considerable depth but without loosing the greater physical picture of the problem and the relevant connections to applications (eg., in Part IV). For researchers it is extremely useful both for providing a virtually complete list of the known results and also as a source of references to the scientific papers. In the impressive list of 858 references one finds both the original papers and the state of the art publications that are carefully collected all the way to publication date (including references published in 2011!). I strongly recommend this book to all those working directly with dynamical systems theory and also to those interested in applying more advanced techniques of nonlinear dynamics.

⭐This book is a very good and thorough overview of the current state of research in the topic of transient chaos. Every aspect of the field is considered. The sizes of the chapters and the scientific importance of the described phenomena in them are well proportioned. Special emphasis is put on the clear introduction of fundamental quantities and their scaling properties. Several nicely drawn color or b&w figures and detailed examples help the readers to understand the text. I especially enjoyed reading Chapters 3 and 12, since deep thoughts were described in them in an elegant way; almost everything became clear at first reading. As a summary. I can tell that this work is targeted at a broad audience as a prospective encyclopedia of transient chaos.

⭐Nice book for both beginners and experts in this field. This book mainly talk about Unstable-unstable pair bifurcation, Riddling bifurcation and superpersistent chaotic transients, Superpersistent chaotic transients in spatiotemporal systems, Noise-induced superpersistent chaotic transients and some applications. Nice written, nice figures and nice summery. I will recommend it for 5 stars.
