Description
The reader who has never met Augus-tine before ought to go first of all to the Confessions, reflected the Trappist monk and scholar Thomas Merton. “Augustine lived the theology that he wrote. . . . He experienced the reality of Christ living in his own soul.” Saint Augustine, the celebrated theologian who served as Bishop of Hippo from a.d. 396 until his death in a.d. 430, is widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers in the Western world. Written in the form of a long prayer addressed directly to God, Augustine’s Confessions, the remarkable chronicle of his conversion to Christianity, endures as the greatest spiritual autobiography of all time. “Augustine possessed a strong, capacious, argumentative mind,” wrote Edward Gibbon. “He boldly sounded the dark abyss of grace, predestination, free-will, and original sin.” And the eminent historian Jaroslav Pelikan remarked: “There has, quite literally, been no century of the sixteen centuries since the conversion of Augustine in which he has not been a major intellectual, spiri-tual, and cultural force.”
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Was waiting for this book and I received in a very good condition. The only thing I didn’t like is the type of papers used. It is not the perfect type of papers to be used for highlighting
⭐Purchased the book for school. Good for the price.
⭐The one-star reviews appearing here that complain of incompleteness and bad formatting in the Kindle format point up a grievous defect in Amazon’s review software that I have noticed before with respect to other multi-edition books. It makes me grind my teeth. The criticisms do not, in fact, pertain to the edition here, containing Monsignor Ryan’s 1959 translation. (I suspect they have to do with the edition containing Henry Chadwick’s translation, but I’m not sure. They may appear everywhere, for all I know.)The Image Classics (Doubleday) edition is complete, containing all 13 books, and is very well set-up. It includes clickable end notes. My comments here imply nothing about the relative merits of the translations, of course. Also, I’ve awarded this edition five stars basically because I had to do something on the star front! I have not yet read the entire thing.
⭐There are those saints about whom we read who were destined to have their names praised from their birth: the Blessed Mother, St. Rita, St. Rose of Lima, St. John Vianney. All of these were holy, start to finish. They are our models and inspirations, our guides and our goals. Then there are the saints that the rest of us can a little more easily relate to…St. Paul, St. Jerome, St. Francis of Assisi and most certainly, St. Augustine.Once grave sinners, made holy and new in the laver of new birth by our Lord. For all those who struggle with sins of the flesh and the wiles of the world, may the words of St. Augustine inspire you toward the path of holiness and instill within you a yearning for sanctification.St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo – Pray for us.
⭐Solid translation of an incredible book, and nicely laid out with a great cover and easy-to-read typeface. I have found this edition of Augustine’s writings to be a little more opaque than some others, but it’s definitely a college reading level and still fairly easy to pick up and read. I’ve enjoyed getting the catholic version of Augustine — as Image Classics is a catholic company, the introduction and footnotes/endnotes are all written from that perspective. This by no means ruins the book, it’s just a different twist on Augustine than I’m used to.
⭐Very readable and therefore has become a good part of my spiritual life
⭐The translation was made modern, avoiding “thee and thou”, easier to read and the prose flows. The content is classic: the autobiography of a sinner in search of God his creator, a journey of conversion, written with prudent candour. St. Augustine, one of the most prolific writers of the Catholic Church has as one of his masterpiece this “Confessions”. It must be read slowly and savoured as there are parts that can be dense. Few autobiographies can be as engaging and deeply human at the same time spiritual.
⭐Since this was originally written in the 300s, I wasn’t so sure it would be relevant to me. Instead I loved St. Augustine’s style of writing as a prayer to God. It was clear that mankind has not changed. He says the scientists know just about everything there is to learn, and we consider science the same today. Only back then the earth was flat and a cell did not exist.St. Augustine’s Confessions chronicles his life story and quest for God in the form of a prayer. This is a must read for anyone who desires to appreciate the historicy of their Chrisitan heritage.
⭐There have been many English translations of the Confessions over the centuries but this one by John K. Ryan is the best I’ve come across so far. The language is neither archaic nor pedestrian and I feel it manages to capture something of the original Latin in what I have read of it so far.(My Latin is not good enough yet to read the entire thing in the original but I hope to be able to someday!)One of the other things I really like in this edition is that Mons Ryan references St. Augustine’s scripture quotations and were appropriate or necessary he elaborates in the notes section on points made by St. Augustine.
⭐The Confessions are not a fast read. They are “a study”, probably better handled in a group. There needs to be some discussion. They are to be read and re-read. A long but worthwhile process for those who want to compare different Doctors of the Catholic Church and different mystics.
⭐Excellent edition of the Confessions.
