⭐There’s something of an irony behind Neil deGrasse Tyson’s decision to publish excerpts from his collective correspondence. Letter writing is well-known as a dying art while astrophysics is abounding in new theories and insights.But the book is less an exercise in corresponding and more an opportunity to get the perspective of deGrasse Tyson on issues that matter to contemporary Americans. Dr. Tyson is opposed to dogmatic religion (one imposes one’s beliefs on the world instead of trying to understand the world as it is), thinks modern philosophy is largely useless (so many words about the various meanings of words) and is most interested in teaching the young how to think for themselves and approach the world scientifically.It’s not that these views are completely original, it’s that he is an excellent communicator of his perspectives (there is even a letter devoted to lecturing vs. conversing). Tyson wants to seize the young with the idea that of the trillions of possible human beings that can be formed by our genome they as an individual are lucky just to be alive. That as independent contributors, they can form testable predictions about the world and add to humankind’s progressive understanding. Ethically, they can choose to better the lives of those around them. With these three goals, it seems that Dr. deGrasse Tyson’s self imposed meaning of life will be achieved.There are also vibrant letters on wide ranging topics such as the value of ambition over IQ, the author’s personal experiences living a block from 9/11 and his thoughts on the increasing importance chosen and birth given identities are forming in our lives.All in all, deGrasse Tyson seems like the kind of person you would want to correspond with which I think is what makes the book so successful.If you want a thoughtful, non-partisan perspective on American life and culture I strongly recommend reading through this selection of Dr. Tyson’s public correspondence. One might not get a vivid impression of his correspondents but the personality and perspective of deGrasse Tyson come through strongly in these brief, but powerful, musings on American culture, science and the civilization to which they owe their birth.

⭐has alot of cool facts spread throught, does have a bit of politics in it a little much for me but would read again for sure

⭐This was advertised as a sequel to Astrophysics for People in a Hurry and I guess it kind of was but it was less learning about astrophysics and more Neil answering peoples sometimes ridiculous questions about various misconceptions or ideas people have. I was looking to learn more about the cosmos

⭐This is a twist in the many books that Neil de Grasse Tyson has written. He shows another aspect of his extraordinary intelligence by sharing with us these letters, his answers and his thoughts on many subjects. So human, it made laugh and cry at times. Thank you Mr. de Grass Tyson! Hope you. write more books like this. So refreshing.

⭐I just rated 4 stars because, well, the same reply kept coming up. Basically the question more people asked was about a higher being the responsible for creation of the universe or the existence of a god, or the importance of religion. So the same answer was written in many ways multiple times. Nevertheless is an entertaining book, full with simple data, funny stories and heart warming episodes.But it also answers the big question. Why Dr Tyson is so successful in communicating the masses about the universe. The answer is so simple yet so brilliant.

⭐Neil’s book is based on letters he gets from fans and worshipers, coupled with his sound-bite-sized replies. They cover about twenty topics (Aliens, Astronomy, World Trade Center Conspiracies, Flat Earth, “Science Deniers”…).It’s a classic “dog-poop fallacy” book. 97% of the pages contain safe, routine, tasty, fruit-flavoured, minimally-packaged, naturally sweetened, DNC-approved, organic, ethically-grown, coffee-table science writing, guaranteed free of any artificial maths (except for Biblical scholars debating over pi), colourings and plastic. However, 3% are pure literary dog-poop: a combination of a diatribe against key people who disagree with his opinion about the Anthropogenic Climate Change Hypothesis, and a eulogy to James Hansen of NASA/GISS. He even manages to coat the NASA/GISS turd with yoghurt, by writing at length about the undisputed and valuable contribution of his childhood heroes NASA/JPL to the Moon landings and spaceflight, thus disguising the data-faking, cherry-picking, pal-review and general skulduggery associated with NASA/GISS and most of the people associated with what he calls Climate Change Science.There is therefore a risk, or perhaps it was the intention, that the reader will swallow the poop with the yogurt. Skeptical readers would be well advised to immunize themselves by preceding this toxic trife with a classic dish such as The Great Global Warming Swindle.

⭐Concise, varied and mind-expanding, Neil’s ensemble of letters embark the reader on one of his most important lessons: it is more fruitful to learn how to think, than what to think.

⭐Love all of Neil’s books. Eye Opening and thought provoking. Society would be far greater if more people were to strive for the level of scientific literacy that Neil hopes to see.

⭐..zu wecken ist nicht ganz einfach. Vor allem in der stark vortgeschrittenen und modernisierten bzw. automatisierten Welt. Für mich ist eine Sache wichtig bei solchen Büchern: Wie schafft man es, den Menschen abzuholen. Und ich rede nicht von den Wissenschaftsbegeisterten, sondern von den, die wissen, dass sie Wissenschaft NICHT mögen oder nicht wissen, ob sie es mögen. Jeder kann dieses Buch in die Hand nehmen und Einblicke bekommen, wie denn der “normale” Bürger denkt, was er für Sorgen hat, Wünsche, Vorstellungen. NDT versucht auf diese Kommentare einzugehen und den Leuten manchmal auch ihre “Angst” zu nehmen. Ich fand das Buch sehr interessant, dennoch würde ich es nicht als aller ERSTES Buch empfehlen, sondern eher sowas wie “Astrophysics for People in a Hurry”.
