Its scientific statements are correct or, at least, they coincide with the opinions held by the vast majority of experts. It establishes cleardistinctions between things we know for sure — in the sense of having strong observational support for them — and things that we know that we do not know, or we do not understand. In this sense, it is scientifically honest.In descriptions of our Universe and of the way it functions, beauty is a recurring word. In an attempt to portray its beauty from the eyes of the beholder, the book is profusely illustrated. Its offbeat, tongue-in-cheek illustrations greatly enhance its readability, particularly in those chapters whose understanding, admittedly, requires a little extra effort. This book’s idiosyncracies remind us of our own smallness and eccentricities even as we read about the logic, function andmagnificence of the Universe.

⭐There are quite a few dictated maths formulae. That may put some people off; I noticed that the text contained more formulae than some expected. I will credit the publishers for good sound quality and good choice for narration, cadence and pronunciation are excellent. There is enough wit as well to make listening enjoyable.

⭐This book will be entirely incomprehensible to non-scientists, although it seems to have been written with non-scientists in mind. It is poorly organized and poorly written. Many technical points are introduced with no preparation. There is far too much technical detail for non-scientists. Physicists might learn a little from the book provided they carefully choose what to read and, more importantly, what to skip.

⭐Starts by claiming to not reference too much math, then proceeds to use mathematical equations to explain several concepts that could be more easily understood to the scientific laymen through conceptual explanation. All be it that the equation are quite simple, this makes it more difficult for the audio book version I listened to while driving.

⭐I have seen many presentations from this author at CERN when I was working there 15 y ago, and here I find his signature style finally available in a “pop science’ book. The colour illustrations, carefully reproduced from his signature plastic slides (back in the day .. maybe he moved to powerpoint 🙂 are perfect. His style, wry humour, is there – it seems they removed the snickering towards the colleagues, which is like a pattern in particle physics. Anyway, this book requires some serious attention, it is “popular” but not basic, although I am sure anyone can become interested in digging some points further in other sources, because he covers A LOT of ground in only 120+ pages. Very very much recommended for a solid intro into particle physics and cosmology, for anyone ready to think a little bit at each page.
