Description
Professor Brian Cox is probably the best-known physicist in the world today. As presenter of the hit television series Wonders of the Solar System and Wonders of the Universe, his affable charm and infectious enthusiasm has brought science to a whole new audience. Born in Lancashire in 1968, Cox was a bright, but not brilliant pupil at school – only receiving a D grade for A level mathematics. He flourished at university, however, gaining a first-class honours degree and an MPhil in Physics from Manchester University before being awarded his PhD in particle physics in 1998. Alongside his studies he also found time to play keyboards for the band D:Ream, and the band topped the charts in 1994 with ‘Things Can Only Get Better’, which was famously used by the Labour Party for its 1997 election campaign. Although he has appeared in several television shows, Brian Cox is not just a celebrity presenter – he is a Royal Society University Research Fellow, a professor at the University of Manchester, and he also works on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland. In 2010 he was awarded an OBE for his services to science, and he has also won several awards for his television work.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I have not see any of Brain Cox items without like them also I feel he know lot what he say of the DVDs and. Also his book too
⭐I really liked Brian Cox until I read this, I feel the author made him come across as an arrogant knob. I am choosing to assume this is down to how the book is written rather than Brian Cox’s personality.
⭐I was rather disappointed in this book which seems to focus for far too long on Brian Cox’s musical career, which is of course interesting and worth including, but I got bored with the detail and waiting for something else. I would have liked more information about his childhood in Salford and to get on to his scientific studies, interests and achievements. The book suggests that Brian Cox is a ‘celeb’ who will not be able to sustain a serious career in science at the same time as his high profile media role. His value as someone who has a great talent for explaining science in a way that is fascinating and comprehensible to ordinary people of all ages is praised, but I felt as if the author either felt he had ‘sold out’ to the media or somehow should not really be a serious scientist as well. The tone of the book seemed rather patronising to me. It did not engage me, it was not entertaining and not what I was expecting or hoping for.
⭐Whilst full of interesting facts about Brian Cox, it relies on quotes and articles that have been previously printed. Readable and worth its price, but I would have much preferred to see an Autobiography available in order to appreciate the guy more. That said Mr. Falk did a creditable job.
⭐Interesting to find out about the man with a gift for expressing complicated scientific theories in a way that I can understand…..well almost!
⭐I enjoyed the book as I am a fan of Brian and his influence on the young scientists of the future. The book was rather rambling and repetitive in places.
⭐as expected
