User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This book only has 20 pages. Exactly what were you expecting from it? I know Brian Cox is usually more deep than this, but what do you expect from 20 pages? Granted, I believed it would be more comedic, but that’s not worth losing a star over.
⭐How the Universe Will End by Prof. Brian Cox and Andrew Cohen”How the Universe Will End” is the very brief and I can’t stress that enough eBook that explains or summarizes how the universe will end. I have to say this and it pains me to say it but this effort is really disappointing. I’m a big fan of Brian Cox, I absolutely love his documentaries and his previous books: “The Quantum Universe: (And Why Anything That Can Happen, Does)”, “Wonders of the Universe” and “Why Does E=mc2? (And Why Should We Care?)” but this 20-page eBook leaves a lot to be desired.Positives:1. A great topic in the hands of Professor Cox.2. A succinct book on how the universe will end.3. Lively design. The cool graphics design is used to capture highlights of the book.4. The cycle of death and rebirth.5. What will happen to planet Earth and what will remain and why.6. If you are looking for a very brief book that can be read in less than an hour, you are in luck.Negatives:1. Way too short.2. The sense that you’ve been cheated. Harsh words I know but I must be honest. In summary, one star for substance another star for a vibrant design and I’m being generous. Unfortunately, I can’t recommend this eBook. I feel cheated out of two dollars, consider it a donation. In the eBook’s defense, I read this from my Kindle 2 and not from my Kindle Fire. If there is a significant difference, I will update my review accordingly. There is only one book on this topic that I highly recommend and it’s “Death from the Skies!: These Are the Ways the World Will End . . .” by Philip Plait.
⭐Short, took half an hour to read. If you take a keen interest in this subject as I do you will find this a little simplistic and generalised. He also skips over his reasoning and fails to press home his theories. It is pitched at people with a little or no knowledge of the subject. Still it is well written in Prof Cox’s unique style.
⭐First things first, this is VERY short. Even within its meagre 20 pages there is space taken up with repetitions of sentences from the text in large ALL CAPS with one or two pictographic diagrams – not scientifics illustrations, but for example a clock to illustrate time.I do not know enough about the science to approve or criticise its presentation but I did feel that things were rather skimmed over. I found myself wanting more explanation of the why and how of things. This was disappointingly shallow. I feel I learned more from the DVDs of Prof. Cox than from this, where usually one would expect a book (even just one chapter of it) to be more in depth.Overall, I would hope that non-tie in books would be more in depth, but if this is supposed to be a loss leader to tempt me to purchase the rest of this particular book, it did not work. For its length and lack of depth I feel it is rather overpriced at 99p, frankly.
⭐Great book. I hated science at school. just didn’t understand it and was boring but Prof.Cox has a way of explaining that is easy for me to understand and interests me so much so I have lots of his books and dvds . Didn’t realise this was part of one of his other books but was interesting. An enjoyable ten min read.
⭐With a name like ‘Brian Cox’ attached to it I was expecting much more. I know that it was an inexpensive publication but even so I don’t consider it to have been value for money. The book was a triumph of style over content. Many of the pages were full of a handful of words in a huge font. Eye-catching but little else. This wouldn’t have been such an issue if the content wasn’t so pedestrian. I felt that it was aimed at an intelligent ten year old and I finished the book without any sense of awe and having learned little that I didn’t already know.
⭐This book tells of physicists’ consensual view about the eventuality of the Universe – doom and gloom. However, I am an optimist who believes that when the Creator returns to us, He will show us the true experience of Space Exploration Age. That will be like telling science fiction adventures – when and where the impossibilities becomes realities and we humans are immortals, each be given a self-regenerate body in which injury would not be permanent. However, we must Will this so that it will happen.
⭐This is only a short extract from a larger work, but it nonetheless captures the issue very well. Cox always – to me anyway – gets his message over in a way that is relatively easy to grasp….and he scores again here.Very deep and poignant leaving you with a feeling of what the universe is all about and why is it here. You don’t have to be a deep thinker to enjoy this work – but it will leave you wondering!!Enjoyed it immensely
⭐Collins promises an ebook “with the emphasis on vibrant design, animated content and expert authors” It also says in the description, “This ebook…delivers its full punch on devices that support colour and animation.” and “This title has complex layouts and has been optimised for reading on devices with larger screens.” I have tried it on several devices including the latest tablets and PCs. There’s not a single animation, video, audio or even any simulated stills of the end of the universe. It does have some nice typography dispersed through it some 20 pages of text but it is most definitely not vibrant, rich, animated or complex. Amazon’s Look Inside feature does not give any clues since it’s only the first page and the cover. Come on Amazon pull your finger out and get some rich content in the Kindle Reader.
