⭐Fantastic book. I happened across it in a used book store and really enjoyed it. Rest In Peace, Dr. Davis.

⭐I loved it because the author does a wonderful job explaining essential mathematical concepts in a easy-to-understand way. The book helps to develop approximation skills and appreciate the applications of math.

⭐This text examines the role of large numbers in mathematics. The first part, which is readily accessible to the lay reader, discusses how numbers are used and expressed, what they mean, and how to compute and estimate with large (or small) numbers. The second part, which is more demanding, addresses the role that large numbers play in some mathematical problems. Davis examines the computation of the decimal expansion of pi, casting out nines to check the accuracy of computations, divisibility tests, systems of linear equations, and the growth rate of sequences. Davis also discusses why large numbers arise in certain mathematical problems and asks the reader to think about this issue in some of the exercises.The exercises, the answers to some of which are provided in the back of the text, tend to be computational. Information about constants, conversion factors, and formulas necessary for solving the problems is provided in the appendices. Since the text was published in 1961, many of the problems use English units that are no longer in use in the sciences.The exposition is generally clear and Davis provides some interesting insights. However, I made a number of annotations in the margins of my text where I found definitions imprecise or arguments incomplete. At one point, I used the text Elementary Number Theory with Applications by Thomas Koshy to fill in the details missing from Davis’ text. Also, Davis leaves some of his assertions unproved.Davis provides the reader with a somewhat dated bibliography that shows where topics raised in the text could be explored further. I think that the reader who finds the topics raised in this text interesting may wish to read the texts
