Description

From revolution on Twitter to romance on Tinder, we live in a world constructed of code – and coders are the ones who built it for us.In Coders, acclaimed tech writer Clive Thompson offers an illuminating reckoning with the most powerful tribe in the world today, computer programmers, asking who they are, how they think, and what should give us pause. Along the way, Thompson ponders the morality and politics of code, including its implications for civic life and the economy, and unpacks the surprising history of the field, beginning with the first coders – brilliant and pioneering women, who were later written out of history. To understand the world today, we need to understand code and its consequences. With Coders, Thompson offers a crucial insight into the heart of the machine. ‘By breaking down what the actual world of coding looks like . . . [Thompson] removes the mystery and brings it into the legible world for the rest of us to debate.’ New York Times‘Masterful . . . [Thompson] illuminates both the fascinating coders and the bewildering technological forces that are transforming the world in which we live.’ David Grann, author of The Lost City of Z

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I am a coder and have been for the past forty years and probably always will be. So I was very interested this book about a rarely studied group. The author has the coders mindset pretty nailed on. We are, outside the boardroom, the most powerful people in many organisations, the players on the pitch as it were. I’d rather be a coder than a powerless middle manager any day.Coders are driving much of the change that is taking place in society today, more from geekiness than any plan. We are open to anyone, although as the author points out, women and minorities can struggle to make inroads in some organisations. So now we have been outed see what we are any maybe try and join us?

⭐I really liked this book. It covered several key aspects of being a programmer and the importance of coding today. Although it talks about the discrimination towards women and minorities in the industry, I missed a reference to the effect of age in this world, mostly dominated by the young. Overall a very good read though.

⭐With an interest in computer science as well as psychology and sociology, this book is the perfect mix! It has given me a much great understanding and respect for the most powerful team I have the pleasure of working with. It offers great insight and is such an easy read… a brief understanding of coding is helpful but not essential. Have even recommend this book to management.

⭐If you believed, they put a man on the moon.If you believe, there’s nothing up my sleeve. Then, nothing is cool.

⭐This book gives a detailed insight into how the coders changed the world we live…not an absorbing reading material but gives insights
