Description

From renowned Mars visionary Robert Zubrin comes his much-anticipated debut novel. Filled with startling authenticity, First Landing follows humankind’s first manned mission to Mars, a new frontier of undreamed-of possibilities—and nightmarish dangers. Five are chosen for the landmark mission to Mars—to become the first humans to walk upon the Red Planet. But when their findings set off a wave of controversy and political upheaval back home, public opinion turns against the Mars mission—and an ineffective government leaves the team stranded. As their situation becomes more desperate, all trust is lost in NASA Mission Control. With differences dividing the crew into warring cliques, life-threatening accidents begin to look like sabotage. Yet somehow the crew must try to pull together. Because if they don’t save themselves, no one will.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is the first fiction book that I have read by Zubrin. I am well aware of his non-fiction works and have read several of them.In this case the style reminded me a lot of books that I read that were written in the 1950s.Strangely, there were some scientific errors that I would not have expected here. (Magnetos in the boots?) There were some nice ties to Zubrin’s real-life work for his various Mars related projects.I recommend it.

⭐Another great book by Dr Robert Zubrin. First Landing is a fast reading, well written novel 262 pages. An easy read. Read it in 1 day. Couldn’t put it down. This one is a sci fi novel of the first landing by 5 astronaut/scientists to Mars. We see a strange mixture of a top gun Air Force Colonel, a Tomboy Army Major/head mechanic, a top notch beautiful female life scientist PHD/medical doctor, a Texas cowboy type PHD Geologist and a historian.Don’t ruin this great sci fi by super analyzing it by trying to say NASA would never allow such a group that has problems getting along and the mission members would never do the things they do against NASA protocols. Remember its a novel…just enjoy it.Robert also has an end chapter describing the low cost Mars Direct approach to send 5 to Mars allowing them to live off the land using a nuke reactor to make fuel from with the help of the Martian atmosphere and a HAB shelter already deposited.I’m a big believer in Mars Direct and support the Mars Society in its efforts to get NASA, Congress and the President up to speed for the need to go to Mars via Mars Direct. I joined the Mars Society as a life member. Also read Robert’s The Case For Mars 5 stars, Mars on Earth 5 stars, Entering Space 5 stars, and How to Live on Mars 3 stars. Robert is the President of the Mars Society, a great rocket scientist who knows his Mars stuff and is a great writer. The end of the book is great. I’d tell you it but I’d ruin the ending for you. I’ll just say its a happy ending and all the heroes do great in different things and a big plus for mankind. After reading First Landing you feel good. Good sci fi using pre existing technology that can take us to Mars. 5 stars. Enjoy

⭐Zubrin brings together a bleeding heart liberal, guitar playing jourmalist, redneck texan beerdrinker, religious republican anti-abortion nutjob and a military guy in a tin can on Mars and has them dislike each other. Its badly written, badly tought out, bad advertising for going to Mars and says only bad things about mr Zubrin. Skip it.

⭐One would expect that a first venture by an aerospace engineer into fiction would have a load of neat technical detail, but very little story populated by cardboard charectors. One would be right about the technical detail, but happily wrong about the story and the charectors. Bob Zubrin’s First Landing is an awe inspiring epic about the first expedition to Mars, taking place just ten years in our future. He has populated his story with a strong group of all too human charectors, not the least of who are the crew of the Beagal. Driven apart by personality clashes, the members of the crew ultimately pull together to overcome disaster and hardship in a story that made me breathless several times during the reading of it.Dr. Zubrin, besides being a fine story teller, is the visionary engineer who developed the Mars Direct scheme to send humans to Mars and bring them back safely to Earth-depicted quite graphicly in the story. However one feels about a Mars program as the “next logical step” for America’s space program, one cannot deny that now in fiction, as he has in countless speaches and in two highly recommended nonfiction books (The Case for Mars and Entering Space), Dr. Zubrin makes a strong case for his point of view. I cannot recommend this story enough.(…)

⭐If we would’ve listened to Robert Zubrin in 1990, We would already be on Mars. This book is somewhat like an early adaption of The Martian, and filled with the obvious dangers of realistically going to Mars. What made the book the first time I got it was looking insideIn seeing that it was signed by Zubrin himself, though not addressed to me but another supporter. Nevertheless, I will treasure this book as a future that could’ve been today, thought a future that still could be..Tomorrow!

⭐I’ve read close to 300 sci-fi books and this is by far one of the best – feels so real that I can’t believe we haven’t been to Mars yet. Thank you Robert Zubrin for such a timely work of fiction (with such a strong nonfictional foundation!)

⭐I read it a long time ago, so I don’t remember how scientifically accurate it is, but I do remember just how awful this book is. Awful, unrealistic dialog, and extremely clichéd cardboard characters. Zubrin also clearly wrote with a leftist partisan point of view, so naturally the more conservative characters in the book are stupid, uneducated, annoying or anti-science. (Again, it’s been too long, so I can’t give you details…) Zubrin should stick to Mars advocacy and you should avoid this stinking pile of garbage…

⭐This story is similar in many respects to Andy Wier’s novel “The Martian”. Andy Wier has said that he got many of the ideas for his book from Robert Zubrin’s book “The Case For Mars”. The main difference between “First Landing” and “The Martian” is the difference in mission architecture. The crew of the Beagle arrive in a habitat that is designed for a long stay mission and is intended to support a variety of “abort to surface” contingency scenarios. The Mars Direct mission architecture is a much cheaper, nearer term, and overall far more robust architecture than the one that Mark Watney flew on in “The Martian”. This, ironically, makes it much harder for Zubrin to devise a convincing predicament that strands the crew.Ultimately, Zubrin has to invoke political turmoil on Earth, combined with acts of deliberate sabotage by religious agitators and extremist hackers, in order to create a situation that imperils the crew. The plot highlights some of the political issues that Zubrin is concerned about, but makes for an improbable story. Zubrin is an ironic victim of his own success in this regard. It’s simply impossible for him to create a believable novel about a Mars mission that goes wrong in the dramatic manner depicted, because his mission architecture is simply too robust to make such a scenario plausible.Nonetheless, it is very interesting to see how the crew of the Beagle cope with the challenges they face. By necessity, Zubrin has to impose much tougher challenges on the crew in order to keep the story interesting. Readers who enjoyed “The Martian” will enjoy reading about how the crew pull together to overcome these challenges.

⭐What I like in this novel is that the characters are actually studying Mars. The Martian was all about going back home, but First Landing goes well beyond that. Also, it anticipates what the political debate about Mars will become. A great read that will uplift your spirit!

⭐Robert Zubrin é um experiente engenheiro aeroespacial, ele é especializado no tema ‘Marte’. Ele escreveu um história de ficção usando esse conhecimento que ele tem. O livro é interessante para quem aprecia esse tipo de tema.

⭐This is a great read and novel about Mars exploration. It is pretty hard SciFi considering the techniques and constructions featured.Sure recommendation for any serious hard SciFi fan or Mars enthusiast like me.A must have for members of the Mars Society 😉

⭐good book even with some variations from the basic scientific plan, overall a very likeable book, i would like to read more about mars exploration
