Description

In this cleverly conceived book, physicist Robert Gilmore makes accessible some complex concepts in quantum mechanics by sending Alice to Quantumland-a whole new Wonderland, smaller than an atom, where each attraction demonstrates a different aspect of quantum theory. Alice unusual encounters, enhanced by illustrations by Gilmore himself, make the Uncertainty Principle, wave functions, the Pauli Principle, and other elusive concepts easier to grasp.

Editorial Reviews: Amazon.com Review My eyes tend to glaze over when I encounter YAPBAQPs (Yet Another Popular Book About Quantum Physics). But this volume captured my attention, and imagination. Told in the same way as Alice in Wonderland (with many of the original passages re-tooled to their new purpose) and a hint of Flatland, Gilmore guides us through the principles of Quantum mechanics in a truly lively and fun way. I suspect it may even be a good read for teens or extremely bright children. Review It (..) includes characters like the uncertain accountant and the state agent who shows Alice how items can be two places at once. — The Vancouver Sun From the Back Cover You’ve heard about Alice’s adventures through the looking glass. Well, Alice is about to embark on another amazing journey. She’s going to shrink again – to the size of a nuclear particle – but she’s not going down the rabbit hole. She’s headed for Quantumland. And what is Quantumland? Think of it as an intellectual amusement park smaller than an atom, where every ride, game, and attraction demonstrates a different aspect of quantum mechanics – the often baffling, always intriguing theoretical framework that seems to provide the most accurate explanations of the way things are in the physical world. In this masterful blend of fantasy and science, Robert Gilmore uses the allegory of Alice’s travels to make the uncertainty principle, Pauli’s principle, high-energy particle physics, and other crucial parts of quantum theory accessible and exciting. About the Author Robert Gilmore is Lecturer in Physics at Bristol (UK) University. During his long career in particle physics, he has worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, and Cern in Geneva. Read more

⭐This book is jam packed with delicious recipes the smooth the path to well being! Low in calories and high in protein, smoothies are the go to nutritional beverage. Learn about the ingredients, the focused impact of fruits and vegetables, and guidance as to the best preparation mixers for the tastiest and healthiest path for optimal fueling of your body! Cheers!

⭐Great Book. . . Addition for library. Hard back, excellent condition.

⭐Very excited about this book

⭐Such a wonderful book! I’m an adult who found a love for math once it was too late to really take formal classes in it. I wanted so badly to understand Quatam Mechanics and heard of this book on an archived episode of Science Friday with Ira Plato. The story is entertaining, and the math and physics concepts are inserted in a way where the reader can decide how deep they want to delve into it. Great for all ages!

⭐This book uses an Alice in Wonderland type format to explain the basics of particle behavior in quantum physics. End of chapter notes help explain the science behind the story, making it more accessible to someone with a basic science background. I have recommended this book to friends interested in chemistry and particle theory. It made me smile, but may be a hard read for someone without any background in atomic theory.

⭐This is a wonderful book, we started reading this to our son as a bedtime story. It covers the basics of quantum physics through the familiar tale of Alice in Wonderland. I highly recommend for parents, teachers, adults and children!

⭐I bought it knowing it was seriously dated. But it’s worth it for the great illustrations, it’s Alice in Wonderland theme, and it’s being the progenitor of the concept of “Quantumland”. For it’s up to date legacy, re: Ruth Kastner’s “Understanding our Unseen Reality”.

⭐Great! If you like Quantum Physics – and I do! You should know a little background in order to understand, and even then rereading some parts is a good idea, but help your techy child or grandchild if they need it and encourage them by explaining the analogies and you all can enjoy Quantum Land!

⭐I love this book. I read it a number of years ago then sold it once I had finished reading it. Recently I felt like reading it again but it’s quite difficult to get hold of so I purchased it second hand.I knew the book was used but literally there is pen and pencil writing on pretty much every page of this copy. The entire book is filled with pen and pencil where the previous owner has written there name and jotted notes throughout.I personally would describe this condition as poor but it hadn’t been described that way by the seller. However the book itself is a brilliant read and a casual read about the world of physics explained in a fun way.

⭐Superb book to dive into quantum mechanics! Love the allegory as it makes it like a fantasy book just that this time it is reality Good for even children as how it is written and it helps opening the mind to the concepts easier than a textbook! All without even equations!Love it

⭐I combination of great choice of product to buy, and from whom I bought it from. Seller highly recommended.

⭐Not as entertaining as I had hoped, but it is informative and places some ideas in a new light.

⭐Light hearted coverage of a difficult subject for children of all ages
