Description
String, Straightedge, and Shadow: The Story of Geometry is a beautifully illustrated book that is a must-read for students learning geometry or for parents helping them through their first geometry course. Julia Diggins masterfully recreates the atmosphere of ancient times, when men, using three simple tools, the string, the straightedge, and the shadow, discovered the basic principles and constructions of elementary geometry. Her book reveals how these discoveries related to the early civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece. The fabric of the story is woven out of archeological and historical records and legends about the major men of mathematics. By reconstructing the events as they might have happened, Diggins enables the attentive reader to easily follow the pattern of reasoning that leads to an ingenious proof of the Pythagorean theorem, an appreciation of the significance of the Golden Mean in art and architecture, and the construction of the five regular solids. Out of print for 34 years, Julia Diggins’ classic book is back and is a must-read for middle school students or for parents helping their children through their first geometry course. You will be fascinated with the graphic illustrations and written depiction of how the knowledge and wisdom of so many cultures helped shape our civilization today. This book is popular with teachers and parents who use Jamie York’s Making Math Meaningful curriculum books.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Got this charming book for my children’s fifth grade home school curriculum. Seller was very prompt, book was in excellent condition, and I would gladly order from them again. Definitely a winner.
⭐This was an enjoyable read for the everyday person of curious mind. As a math guy i would of liked to see more detailed constructions of geo concepts and proofs, but this book (which was written pre-moon landing) was written for a curious youth. In fact, my used copy was from some middle scool learning center. It will be a great book to set in my classroom library.
⭐It is out of print, so I was happy to track this library discard down. One man’s tresure is another one’s trash. It really was in great shape.
⭐As a teacher/curriculum developer for a 10th grade homeschooler with strengths in art and 3D constructions and difficulty with reading, this will be an excellent book to start off our lessons in geometry. To my way of thinking, putting geometry in the context of its historical development would be desirable for any student –and the clear writing of this book makes this accessible for students perhaps as young as 6th grade without sounding patronizing to an average 9th or 10th grader. I’m so glad to find it!
⭐Math has never been so interesting! The book covers the beginnings of geometry from pre-history through the ancient Greeks. The story is approachable even for children who haven’t covered the more advanced geometry described later in the book. I particularly appreciate the self-explorations that are cleverly wrapped into the story which inspire experimentation rather than demand obedient practice. Highly recommended book for all ages!
⭐It was just someone hypothesizing about “how they might have” discovered stuff.it had some good parts to it but I would not read this for fun.
⭐I liked the story of geography and I think it was very interesting and that any one who wants to know about geography should read it.
⭐This is a classic, but the historical information is as relevant as when it was written. The students found it interesting.
