While you might not want to scream, “Look at me!” in a fire engine–red dress, you don’t have to wear only head-to-toe black, either. Try adding some color as an accent with a scarf, or some great jewelry, or even metallic shoes or a unique bag for a change. 4) Only wear it if you’re comfortable that it’s you exactly as you see yourself. Wearing pants when you really feel more comfortable in skirts and dresses (or vice versa) just to change up your wardrobe is not necessary. You know what you feel and look good in, and it’s okay to stick with that look. 5) Only wear it if the fabric feels soft on your skin. Don’t wear it if it’s at all itchy, because it’ll distract you and make you uncomfortable all day. 6) Only wear it if it’s going to keep you warm enough. Showing some skin is sexy, but in the winter, try a sexy neckline instead of bare arms. 7) Only wear it if it fits you properly. If it’s too big or too small, it won’t flatter your figure and you’ll be trying to adjust yourself all day. Again, distracting and uncomfortable! 8) Only wear it if it doesn’t make you look like you tried too hard. While it’s important that everything you’re wearing goes well together, you don’t want to look too matchy-matchy. Avoid matching your shoes to your belt to your bag to your hair accessories. 9) Only wear it if it’s appropriate for the location, activity, or venue. There’s no need to wear high heels to the company picnic. Not only will you look out of place, but you won’t be able to participate in any of the day’s events. 10) Only wear it if it represents your generation, meaning you don’t look like you’re wearing your mother’s clothes — or your daughter’s, for that matter. Just because micro-minis are in for the teen set does not mean that you should necessarily follow that trend. Jill Martin Reveals Her Fashion Discoveries in an Amazon-Exclusive Interview What was the biggest fashion discovery you made while you were writing Fashion For Dummies? While following the trends is always fun, you’ll look your most beautiful and stylish if you stay true to your personality and dress to flatter your body type. Has your style changed at all because of this book? Well, maybe not changed entirely, but it definitely evolved and got more refined. While I used to have an overflowing closet with tons of different looks, now I have a cleaned-out and organized closet that’s narrowed down to the more classic look that best expresses my style. Is there any one fashion rule that you would advise people of across the board, regardless of style or body type? Yes! Invest wisely and think long-term when it comes to your basic and staple items. It’s okay to spend a little more on these pieces, because you’ll have them in your wardrobe for years. Likewise, look for bargains when buying super trendy items. You won’t have these for more than a season or two, so there’s no need to spend too much. What is the biggest splurge you ever made on your wardrobe, and was it worth it? I bought this amazing Chanel bag. I had no business spending that kind of money at the time, but I had to have it. And, yes, it was worth it because it’s a classic that will never go out of style. I’ve been using it for years and will continue to do so. I have more than gotten my money’s worth. What is the best bargain you ever found? I found a couple of beautiful rhinestone broaches at a flea market once. I use them all the time. I wear one on my jean jacket pocket, and the other I pin onto a formal dress to give it a vintage look. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Perfect for someone who is just entering adulthood, or anyone who needs fashion advice. Explains how to identify a good garment, how to dress for your body, wardrobe must haves, fashion ” rules”, work dress codes, and how to put together an outfit. Nice to have around for ideas, too. Solid 5 stars.

⭐Good for people that know nothing about fashion… other than that, it can be very boring and repetitive…

⭐After struggling through yet another fashion book filled with “inspirational” pictures of celebrities in outfits that are both unaffordable and surprisingly unattractive, I was positively relieved to discover the Fashion for Dummies book. The book is so full of useful information that if you don’t collect fashion books the way I do, just buy this one fashion book and feel free to ignore all the others.Like all “Dummies” books the book is organized in a way that makes it easy to skip around and find the topics that are of most interest to you quickly. This comprehensive book covers everything from personal style, spotting quality, how to wear colors and prints in a flattering way, wardrobe building and how to dress for special occasions. Helpful illustrations throughout the book show you what works and what doesn’t. At over 300 pages long, Fashion for Dummies is a smart investment for any woman who is more interested in looking her best than in looking like a celebrity wanna be.Stephanie Ann, Author

⭐My wife bought this book, and loved it. She wanted to know more about fashion, and this gave her a good foundation. She worked at the fitting room at Target, and started getting excellent customer reviews for her advice after she read this book. I know she would recommend it to anyone.

⭐From the fashion quiz (great place to start) to the purging of my closet of anything but 10’s (something I will do) the book is a wonderful resource of interesting ideas (the 5 piece wardrobe for travel), informative tips (never wear white to a wedding), and helpful hints (what should be your wardrobe staples). I recommend this book for anyone interested in looking their best. Bravo to Jill Martin for creating a 10.

⭐Easy to read and more importantly enjoyable to read. Works equally well for people who have an interest in fashion and for those who have no idea about it. I will be using this book as a reference for a long time to come.

⭐I grew up in the sticks (literally in the jungle) and have had NO interest in fashion my whole life. Frankly it all completely overwhelmed me. I am amazing at my career now that I live in a big city but have struggled getting ahead. I finally realized that a large part of it is more than likely my lack of fashion sense (sadly because people shouldn’t be that crazy about judgment but whatevs). Anyway this book has been awesome and super helpful for me because I have specifics to go off of and no longer feel intimidated. I’m excited to move forward and live in my style… 🙂 Thanks so much!

⭐I have lost a lot of weight in the past few years and have had to rebuild my wardrobe. I thought this book might help. One of the author’s ideas that helped me a lot was that everything in your closet should be a 10. I have a habit of going for quantity sometimes more than quality. Often now when I consider a clothing purchase, I ask myself if I feel fabulous in the item. This question helps me make better purchase decisions. One thing I disagreed with is the author’s vehement insistence that one never wear hosiery with open toed shoes or sandals. I do not like the feel of bare feet inside any kind of shoes, and at 56, my (slender, well-shaped) legs need some help. I agree that reinforced toes look dreadful if they show, but there are plenty of sheer toed stockings available. Bare legs are not for everyone!
