⭐Being an 1st Edition AD&D player, I found the 4th Edition Hardcovers a bit confusing. 4E revolves deeply around tactical combat. There is a deep complexity to it. Most spells & powers revolve around their function within combat. As I read through the Player’s Handbook every page refers to a function of combat. However, basic combat is discussed in Chapter 9, around 260 pages in. I ended up skipping most of the book and reading it out of order to comprehend the game. This book correctly handles the game. After about 70 pages of a crash course and some sample characters, it starts discussing combat in it’s entirety. It puts a number of things into perspective, the interaction of proficiency and various pluses with different weapons, armor, shield use. I think this puts you a bit ahead in the game. Players who got into it would eventually learn these things, but this gives you a much better start.

⭐Last time I played was under AD&D 2nd edition. So, yeah, a long time. Seeing a dummies book seemed like a good idea on how to get back in. Either it’s really dummies down, or much of the stats emphasis has been removed in an attempt to make the game more approachable.I also understand from a colleague that this rule set has been superseded and wasn’t so much of a beloved revision among long time players. I’m still reading it as a means of refreshing my base knowledge. I’ll soon be buying the 5th edition players handbook to get back up to date and back in the game. Not bad, but not the best dummies or D&D book I’ve ever owned.

⭐First off the guide is fine. My 4-out-of-5 rating of it is based on the need really. To play D&D you don’t need a 464 page book. Sure it’s helpful but because it doesn’t cover ALL of the 4e books (some came out after this book) it’s not actually a complete guide. In order to make your characters now it’s much more helpful if you have information from the various published resources available, or you are missing out on powers, builds, abilities etc. that you could otherwise have access to. Honestly I suggest getting the base core books then splurging for a D&D Insider account (available at Wizards.com) unless you’re like me and you want to have both! This book has a lot of helpful information but playing (as in, being a player as opposed to being a DM) D&D is fairly easy to catch on to especially once your character is made. DMing is much more complicated and I HIGHLY recommend the DM version of this book as it is not only a very good guide but it is one that is much more necessary than this one.The spirit of these books are fantastic though, written by true D&D lovers with tons of experience from playing to working for Wizards of the Coast.-D

⭐Hey Guys. A well written comprehensive book for the total beginner. From a brief history, to the basics of gameplay ,its easy to understand and fun to read as are most of the “Dummies” books. If you don’t have a clue, and just want to try and understand the way the game is played, the type of dice, character creation, dynamics of play etc.,its all in here.Great easy read.

⭐I like it because it’s D&D for dummies. Lol

⭐The authors do an excellent job of breaking down the vast world of DnD into manageable, digestible chunks of information for newbies like me. The book is well written, well organized, thorough, and enjoyable. My only suggestion would be to enhance it with pictures and callout references to complex materials such as character sheets, but I wouldn’t say that’s an essential change. If you’re completely new to DnD, this is a really good information source to begin with, as it’s a clear and user-friendly supplement to the Player’s Handbook, which, in my opinion, doesn’t provide as much introductory guidance as a newbie will need. This book fills in the gaps of the Player’s Handbook by offering tactical advice from the perspective of seasoned players (indeed, Richard Baker is a full-time writer and designer for Wizards of the Coast, the makers of DnD), and so far the book has made me feel better prepared to get started with the game and not say or do something rather foolish. I highly recommend this for beginners.

⭐Absolutely loves reading it and being able to play with my fiancé who has played since he was a kid. Looking forward to more books and gaming.

⭐This book was alright. It doesn’t really tell you anything that’s not in the Player’s handbook. 3.5 edition. I wouldn’t recommend buying this book.. Just read the player’s handbook & if you need help, call your GM/DM (dungeon master/game master). Additionally, since 4th edition came out, you may want to check that out, because it’s dumbed down a lot.. Or check out Pathfinder.. Unfortunately, this book is pretty obsolete now.

⭐D&D is one of those things I’ve heard a lot of people say they wish they knew how to play. Learning D&D is indeed quite a daunting task, trust me I’ve done it the hard way. I primarily purchased this book as a learning aid for new players, a function which it performs admirably. Written by two designers from Wizards Of The Coast and officially endorsed by TSR the book reads as a tutorial taking a new player step by step through character creation and playing the game. If you are interested in D&D buy and read this before investing in the core rulebooks. As a pretty experienced DM I also find this book surprisingly useful as a reference tool. It’s faster to navigate than the Players Handbook or the DM’s Handbook and the text is bigger and therefore easier to read by candlelight (yea I’m one of THOSE DM’s) All in all its a useful book to have around.

⭐I refer to this book often at my weekly gaming sessions (we play 3.5e). It covers the basics but is a bit frustrating in that it does not cover “Barbarian” as a basic class. It’s useful when used in conjunction with the Player’s Handbook.

⭐This “For dummies” guide is perhaps one of the greatest ways to get started on the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons. It includes everything you actually need to know to get started as a newbie. Even though you need the three core rulebooks in order to play the full game, this is an absoulutely great start. (And it actually deals with one of the most complicated subjects of D&D which is to say… explaining to other folks and people outside the hobby what the heck this game is all about. There are a few mistakes that may cause a bit of confusion. For example: The sample dungeon poster map contained within this book is from the 3,0 version of the same book. And so there is a sorcerer chip, from which there are no character sheet connected(It’s representing the wizard I suppose).Apart from that and a few other minor mistakes this is a great starting point for any potential gamer and I can hardly recommend it.Rated byAnders Stage from Denmark (A long-haired very tall geek…hehe)

⭐Exacting what I was looking for to explain the complicated rules for a starter

    ⭐A great help
