⭐Not everyone is going to find this a page-turner, but if you love Chinese history and culture, are familiar with the Tang Dynasty and some of its most famous poets, you too will find yourself unable to put this book down. Waley’s mastery of the language and knowledge of Chinese culture and history, not to mention his incredible knowledge of the arcane details of Chinese history which must reflect decades of reading the official court histories, have been used as the book’s frame, but it is the wonderful down-to-life details of what everyday life meant to Bai Juyi that make this book so appealing. The anecdotes are delicious, the insights into court politics fascinating, and the stories behind this poet’s most famous poems material I haven’t found anywhere else despite many decades of study. The good news is that there is now a modern reprint of this book (Kessinger Legacy Reprints). The downside is the retention of the book’s original Wade-Giles spellings, which means frequently having to reach for a Wade Giles-Pinyin dictionary of place and proper names.
