Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This is a good book if you are looking to get a basic grasp of differential equations – a tough subject by any standard. Holzner has provided a book that can be used by someone who had calculus but no exposure to differential equations or for someone who wants a supplemental text to a course one is taking on the subject in school. He does not review any calculus concepts in the text, but just assumes you know them.He covers all the introductory material starting with terminology first. This is followed by linear, separable, and exact first order equations and Euler’s method. In Part II, he covers second and higher order linear homogeneous and linear nonhomogeneous equations. He shows how to solve problems using the methods of undetermined coefficients and variation of parameters. Part three covers more advanced stuff such as using power series to solve problems, series solutions near singular points, Laplace transforms and systems of linear first order equations. All that being said, I think the author could have provided more “hand holding” in the discussion of the material. One math text on calculus I read used callouts to explain what was going on when solving problems. That was nice. There is a companion text to this book called Differential Equations Workbook for Dummies. I would highly recommend that you also obtain this book. By doing the problems in the workbook as you work through the chapters in this “theory” book, it will be greatly helpful in understanding the concepts. The workbook has a corresponding chapter with worked out solutions for each chapter in this book. Unless you possess some proficiency in the subject matter, I feel you will need the workbook as I found this book somewhat difficult to follow at times, but maybe that’s just me. The author also provides an introduction to additional material in each chapter which does not have corresponding problems in the workbook, for example, a discussion on the Wronskian. At the end of the book, Holzner provides some helpful online tutorial sources to enhance and supplement your learning. One source I recommend highly is Paul’s Online Math Notes. If you get stuck on any section, try finding the corresponding information on Paul’s site. Sometimes a different take is helpful. Going through the entire tutorial on this site will cement your learning of the subject.
⭐It’s hard to tell if I didn’t like this book much because I hate differential equations, or because of the way the book is written. I found it difficult to search out what I needed and I didn’t feel that the explanations added anything to what I had already been told. I already own several “for dummies” books (trig, calculus 1&2, physics 1&2, electricity, and more) so I know what to expect. I didn’t feel this one was as clear or as good at helping me have those a-ha moments…but this was also an exceedingly difficult class. I gave the book 4 stars because the one or two things it was able to help me with were useful. I just wouldn’t recommend getting this book if you think it’s going to save you at the last minute. It’s more likely to be helpful as a companion right from the beginning of the term.
⭐This book and the associated workbook are mostly useless because the author skips steps in his explanations. When you are trying to learn how to do something you need to know EVERY STEP.The rest of the “for Dummies” Calculus series was excellent, so this book was a real disappointment. Avoid this author.Check out the MathIsFun website or Krista King if you want a real explanation of how to solve differential equations. I’m getting an “A” in my Differential Equations class, so I know the problem is not me.
⭐Really easy to read and understand. I bought the book to help with my tutoring, to give me alternate ways of teaching differential equations. Overall, it is a good book, but I’ve found a few errors, especially in the Laplace Transform section. The Transform table is incorrect.
⭐This was my first “For Dummies” book and it was an okay experience overall. I’m using Boyce and Diprima for my class, but this isn’t anymore clear (for the most part) to be completely honest. You’ll get the informalness of a typical For Dummies book, but it doesn’t touch up on little things that a student would miss or not understand from their textbook. This book does not contain Boundary Value Problems by the way.I would recommend this text for a cheap Differential Equations book.A pricy Differential Equations book that’s well worth the price is Stroud’s DE’s.
⭐I did not find this book to be very helpful. I am really struggling to understand Diff Eq. This book appeared to lack depth and emphasize “cuteness” of cartoons, etc, over content and aids to learning. Admittedly, Diff Eq is a very complex subject. Some people who have different learning styles might benefit from this book more than I did.
⭐As described
⭐Albert Einstein is credited with saying, “If you can’t explain it to a six year old, you don’t understand it yourself.” The authors of the “for dummies” series understand it. Without exception, I have very much appreciated and benefited from simple and clear explanations of what each method is. Math is by far the most poorly taught subject, this series is a notable exception.
⭐I am still working my way through this book so you might think that this is a premature review. However this book nails down what you need to know and examples with answers on differential equations, the book also has Java code for Euler’s theorem which although published over fifteen years ago is still current today.
⭐This is not as good as other books in the dummies series. This is a difficult book to follow for beginners. There is a lack of explanations throughout the book. If you are new to differential equations or are struggling with them then I would not recommend this book.
⭐Linear Algebra is the most abstract, intimidating and demanding Maths specialism and D.Es can be a handful too. However, this text will aleviate all your fears. A joy to read but you still have to work at it.
⭐As a dummy, I wanted it to be simpler meaning less reading and more problem solving, I bought the book to refresh what I already know and have forgotten. It is handy, but it is not quick!
⭐Bought for my son’s Uni course – worth buying
