Description
Gillian Beer’s classic Darwin’s Plots, one of the most influential works of literary criticism and cultural history of the last quarter century, is here reissued in an updated edition to coincide with the anniversary of Darwin’s birth and of the publication of The Origin of Species. Its focus on how writers, including George Eliot, Charles Kingsley and Thomas Hardy, responded to Darwin’s discoveries and to his innovations in scientific language continues to open up new approaches to Darwin’s thought and to its effects in the culture of his contemporaries. This third edition includes an important new essay that investigates Darwin’s concern with consciousness across all forms of organic life. It demonstrates how this fascination persisted throughout his career and affected his methods and discoveries. With an updated bibliography reflecting recent work in the field, this book will retain its place at the heart of Victorian studies.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Adam Gopnik referred to Prof. Beer’s exceptional work in his book on Lincoln and Darwin, Angels and Ages. Her book is really something.
⭐Gillian Beer’s writing will never be dated and will never cease to be useful to those interested in the sometimes subtle, sometimes not-so-subtle relationship between science and literature, between the major ideas that shaped western culture and the stories that form and are formed by that culture. Furthermore, she delivers complex ideas with a clarity that much other criticism. Cannot recommend enough to students of Darwin or students of fiction or students of (western) history.
⭐It’s an erudite treatise by a first rate academic but at times it does read like a Ph.D thesis.
⭐I find the book description by Amazon (below) very informative and accurate and can only add, that for me, personally, it is a very good read in its ambition to combine Darwin’s plots with literary narratives from the same period. The Author has been very creative in his investigations and it is a joy to follow his thoughts. This new edition contains one new chapter in addition to the earlier editions. The concluding chapter 9: “Darwin and the consciousness of others”. It also contains an updated select bibliography, further reading related to Darwin and a useful index.
