⭐If you have to get a book on literary theory, this is the book to get. The authors do a very nice job of covering the various theories, and as a bonus, they write about them in an interesting way. Theory has plenty of jargon, and these authors do a nice job of either avoiding or explaining the jargon.

⭐This book is one of the best introductions to literature I have ever come across. I like the non-traditional selection of texts, the intelligent and logical approach to topics, the connections the two authors make among writers and literary trends. Although the title may make it sound as a book for undergrad students, it is interesting enough to cross the borders of the category and appeal to more experienced readers.

⭐I am a college senior and comparative literature major, but still find most literary theory essays too daunting and tedious to read. This book got me to start thinking about the “big questions” in literary theory, and the suggested readings touch upon just about everything.

⭐Ordered this for a class, used it once. I should have just bought an online version.

⭐Funny, fascinating and filled with fluently written chapters on things like “beginnings”, “endings” and “narrators”. I learnt a heck of a lot about literary theory from this one book. The chapters are short, very easy to read and have useful references at the end. I cannot think of a better introduction to the topic. I’m sure it’s ideal reading if you are about to starts a degree in English Literature, are studying creative writing or if you love reading and want to take a peek beneath the bonnet.

⭐I am a first-year BA English Literature student. This is a fun and accessible theoretical primer that gives the new uni student an intellectual edge; I got a high first-class mark on my initial poetry essay because of this. Literary theory is notoriously abstruse, but this introduction is a feat of clarity and encouragement, worthy of your time and money. The bibliographies are superb, too. Rarely is it the case that a student can describe a theory text as a pleasure read (let’s be real)—this is one such case!

⭐Bought this for English Literature course at Uni – it was a recommended book but not essential for 1st year. However, it has come up again as a book to have in the 2nd year so very pleased with this purchase.

⭐Have bought this for course reading at Oxford uni on-line course. Really enjoying it (eye opening info for a newbie to the subject)

⭐Nothing to dislike about the book which I have found very interesting. Some parts are challenging for the general reader, but these are well explained.
