⭐Excellent information that provides perspective on Melville’s whaling years and how it connects to his writing.Pricey but worthwhile; it is worth your consideration.Wilson Heflin was an old coot of the Alabama variety. Working independently of the Yale crowd but in communication with them, he used his knowledge of maritime paperwork to fill out Melville’s life at sea. We plundered his dissertation for years, and he was uniformly generous about it. Heflin was also part of the crowd that developed a real faculty and college curriculum at the Naval Academy, where he taught for around three decades (astonishingly they are ranked in the top ten liberal arts colleges–not bad for a military school with an engineering core). His teaching there kept him both busy and satisfied.When he died, he still had not published his dissertation, although he had published his most important discoveries as scholarly notes. When the two present editors took over his work they made the decision to attempt to verify every fact Heflin had turned up. It is said (by Mary K herself, I think) that she traveled more miles checking Heflin than she did sailing around the world.So this book is not only the key work on Melville’s life at sea, it’s also a monument to a great scholar and a magnanimous man. Apparently Vanderbilt remaindered the book: two copies have slipped through my hands, but the third sits on my shelf between MELVILLE: THE MAKING OF THE POET and THE ESSEX AND THE WHALE.
