⭐This is the best introduction to Leavis I have seen. The great critic’s key ideas are lucidly outlined, making this usable for the teacher.
⭐For some time F. R.Leavis -literary critric, cultural critic and thinker – has been under a cloud of forgetting. Once an icon of English Literary Criticism, his work slipped into obscurity, perhaps because of establishment rejection, partly because of changes in the way people wanted to read literature. However, since about 1981 there have been fresh starts – the New Left favoured the role of Scrutiny in the years of the rise of fascism, Professor Mackillop brought out his biography attesting implicitly to Leavis’ greatness. And now Richard Storer has written a comprehensive and detailed account of Leavis’ work which sees him afresh with the eyes of a new generation of readers for a new generation of readers and students.A Leavis revival is under way. Considering Mr Murdoch’s recent comments on the role of profit as the prime force in human life, it is high time that Leavis’ thought, and what he stood for, made a come-back and was investigated by a new generation seeking values in thought and for society. Richard Storer’s book is an important part of that new thrust in contemporary thinking.
