Description

A collection of quotations from Canada’s greatest literary theorist. “There is no Canadian writer of whom we can say … that their readers can grow up inside their work without ever being aware of a circumference.” Northrop Frye came to that conclusion after a detailed study of the imaginative achievements of Canada’s writers from the earliest period to 1965, when that sentence from his study first appeared in print. Over the decades since then, the statement has come to be regarded as a benchmark of individual and national literary achievement. The Northrop Frye Quote Book is a specialized dictionary of quotations on all subjects that is based on the thoughts and writings of one person. It is the handiwork of a single contributor, albeit the cogitations of a remarkable one. It is also evidence that there is a Canadian writer of whom it may be said that we can grow up inside his work “without ever being aware of a circumference.” John Robert Colombo has written, translated, edited, or compiled over two hundred books, including seven dictionaries of quotations. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto and a Fellow of the Frye Centre at Victoria University.Jean O’Grady, a graduate of the University of Toronto, served as the associate editor of The Collected Works of Northrop Frye. She is also the author of the biography of Margaret Addison, the first dean of women at Victoria College.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Only 20 or 30 years ago Northrop Frye was widely appreciated as one of the world’s finest literary critics with a sharp eye for great fiction and poetry, a philosopher with a deep understanding of mythology, metaphor and symbolism, perhaps among the few who best saw what William Blake represented, a professor who deemed that the university was an encounter with real life and that the pedestal of human development was culture which makes students critical of the world the way it is, an astute and humorous commentator of the nitty-gritty implied in simply existing, a radical connoisseur of what Canada wasn’t and what it could become and how it was the same and yet different from the United States and perhaps strangest of all an overtly devout Christian who believed in the salvation kerygma – the proclamation of the incarnation, death and resurrection of Jesus – while simultaneously relegating many of the main doctrines of Christianity, including the Creation, the Afterlife and the Apocalypse, to the status of metaphors and noting that the proof for a historical Jesus was only in the Bible. Today, Northrop Frye, is no longer widely read even if he has not been forgotten. However, this book, The Northrop Frye Quote Book, by John Robert Colombo, should – hopefully anyway – relaunch interest in Frye. Colombo has chosen 3,600 quotes from Frye’s writings grouped into A to Z topic headings with uncanny insight, which comprehensively reveal the awesome scope of Frye’s interests and the pertinence of most of what he says, even if it’s certainly possible to disagree with some of his conclusions, but impossible not to recognize that almost everything he says has to be considered seriously. Colombo’s book also gives a full picture of the man Frye, a man who always aimed for clarity, freely used colloquialisms as well as scholarly terms, was deeply involved in daily life and understood the limits of understanding while understanding that there are universal values which can deeply improve our individual lives and protect us from fanaticism of all sorts. ⭐To paraphrase Frye, we can grow up inside his work without ever being aware of a circumference. His views and thoughts are a continuum of brilliance which illuminate pathways throughout life. I’m happy and grateful we have this book that lets us drop in on those views and thoughts at our leisure. It’s an inexhaustible collection of inestimable treasures.
