Description
The Oxford Companion to English Literature has long been established as the leading reference resource for students, teachers, scholars, and general readers of English literature. It provides unrivalled coverage of all aspects of English literature – from writers, their works, and the historical and cultural context in which they wrote, to critics, literary theory, and allusions. For the seventh edition, the Companion has been thoroughly revised and updated to meet the needs and concerns of today’s students and general readers. Over 1,000 new entries have been added, ranging from new writers – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Patrick Marber, David Mitchell, Arundhati Roy – to increased coverage of writers and literary movements from around the world. Coverage of American literature has been substantially increased, with new entries on writers such as Cormac McCarthyand Amy Tan and on movements and publications.Contextual and historical coverage has also been expanded, with new entries on European history and culture, post-colonial literature, as well as writers and literary movements from around the world that have influenced English literature. The Companion has always been a quick and dependable source of reference for students, and the new edition confirms its pre-eminent role as the go-to resource of first choice. All entries have been reviewed, and details of new works, biographies, and criticism have been brought right up to date. So also has coverage of the themes, approaches and concepts encountered by students today, from terms to articles on literary theory and theorists. There is increased coverage of writers fromaround the world, as well as from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, and of contextual topics, including film and television, music, and art. Cross-referencing has been thoroughly updated, with stronger linking from writers to thematic and conceptual entries.Meanwhile coverage of popular genres such as children’s literature, science fiction, biography, reportage, crime fiction, fantasy or travel literature has been increased substantially, with new entries on writers from Philip Pullman to Anne Frank and from Anais Nin to Douglas Adams. The seventh edition of this classic Companion – now under the editorship of Dinah Birch, assisted by a team of 28 distinguished associate editors, and over 150 contributors – ensures that it retains its status as the most authoritative, informative, and accessible guide to literature available.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I have had the 5th edition, edited by Margaret Drabble, since the mid 1980s, and I have consulted it so many times that my book, a paperback, is in four sections. The seventh edition, edited by Dinah Burch, came out only three years ago. This time, I made sure to get a hardbound copy. While not changing its old standard of comprehensive entries for English lit, this new edition has more general articles on schools and movements. And, of course, there is a long entry for J. K. Rowling. There are also entries for important American and other European authors. The trade-off is that there are fewer entries for individual fictional characters, but I still keep the 5th edition handy for a second opinion.
⭐Arrived much earlier than expected in a perfect condition! A veritable case of customer delight! My best wishes for a most prosperous business!
⭐This is a basic reference work that belongs in everyibrary.
⭐The 5 stars are for the book; the price gets an F minus. I bought the 5th edition of this fine book for 35 bucks. Now they want 147 dollars for this 2009 edition. Unreal. Go buy the 5th edition through third party folks instead.
⭐Firstly, my review may be biased as I love the Oxford Companion series and have well thumbed hard copies of both the English Literature and English Language volumes. I’ve just bought the ereader Literature version for an astonishing £4.55. It’s probably going to be one of my best under a fiver investments ever! This is bang up to date, with entries reflecting new authors and American literature. There are also sections on Black British authors, Children’s Literature, Literary Prizes and prize winners as well as a full A to Z. All in all, an outstanding reference resource and great to while away the day just browsing. The hyperlinks make it almost as user friendly as a hard copy, but the convenience of having this tucked away on the kindle to dip into at any time is just amazing. I can’t recommend this highly enough to anyone with a remote interest in reading and literature.
⭐An excellent range of content from synopses to terms of Greek rhetoric.
⭐It is more than twenty years since I bought the CONCISE edition of this book, the binding has gone, and is long over due that I replaced that book with this new edition.
⭐I’d like to tell you more but Amazon have already censored one review.
⭐A very good successor to the earlier editions
