Description
Bringing his perennially popular course to the page, Yale University Professor Paul H. Fry offers in this welcome book a guided tour of the main trends in twentieth-century literary theory. At the core of the book’s discussion is a series of underlying questions: What is literature, how is it produced, how can it be understood, and what is its purpose?Fry engages with the major themes and strands in twentieth-century literary theory, among them hermeneutics, modes of formalism, semiotics and Structuralism, deconstruction, psychoanalytic approaches, Marxist and historicist approaches, theories of social identity, Neo-pragmatism and theory. By incorporating philosophical and social perspectives to connect these many trends, the author offers readers a coherent overall context for a deeper and richer reading of literature.

⭐This is a great book for: ENGL 300: Introduction to Theory of Literature… A Open Yale Course. I watch the lectures, then I read the course transcripts in the book. A lot of times I can get distracted and confused in what he’s talking about. However when I read this I get a much greater understanding. Just a tip if you are going to buy this book. You should buy the book: The Critical Tradition, 3rd Ed. … It’s very important to do so. So you can follow along the course without skipping a whole bunch of readings… Or else it’s not worth the time. Good thing I mowed yards and did chores. Books are well worth the price. Knowledge is worth the price tag to me…Buy the book if you are taking this course…Hope I helped.Edit 1:You should also buy the book: A New Handbook of Literary Terms… It’s an amazing book and it defines the origins of words, and other important aspects of literary definitions… Amazing read.
⭐This book consists of the published lecture notes for Professor Paul Fry’s Yale course on Literay Theory. It makes this often difficult subject readily understandable. Since the course is now available free on streaming television those who are watching these Yale courses will find it very handy for review.
⭐Great book – Dr. Fry distills everything wonderfully. Even more, he shows how different schools and theories evolve from each other or overlap. Any graduate student in the humanities would benefit from this volume. Can’t recommend this enough!
⭐Came fast and was as described.
⭐This is the must read course for all interested in humanities and social sciences. Gives you more perspective not only on texts but on your own field of intrest.
⭐This is excellent in all regards.
⭐The book does not include most of Professor Fry’s lectures. So, I would not recommend it. However, I recommend listening to the audio of the same lecture.
⭐I bought this volume after following Paul Fry’s recorded lectures covering mostly the same field. Both approaches are masterly and lucid interpretations of a challenging field of enquiry. Recommended both for newcomers seeking an introduction to the field and for those wishing to engage critically in a research context.
⭐This is an outstanding book. It is the printed version of Fry’s lecture course at Yale. Not only does it offer an excellent introduction to the major 20th century turns in the theory of literature such as Formalism, Structuralism, Post-Structuralism etc,, it simultaneously provides a philosophical background which would enable readers to grasp much of the basis of contemporary philosophy.Fry is not only a gifted teacher, he additionally laces his difficult material with much wry humour and irony.I strongly recommend this book
⭐It arrived quickly and was in good order. If you are taking the online Yale Theory of Literature course then this is a must have.
⭐Paul Fry is a brilliant teacher.
