Description

The works of Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) are widely acclaimed as being among the most original and provocative writings of twentieth-century critical thought, and have become required reading for scholars and students in a range of academic disciplines. This book provides a lucid introduction to Benjamin’s oeuvre through a close and sensitive reading not only of his major studies, but also of some of his less familiar essays and fragments. Gilloch offers an original interpretation of, and fresh insights into, the continuities between Benjamin’s always demanding and seemingly disparate texts. Gilloch’s book will be of particular interest to students and scholars in social theory, literary theory, cultural and media studies and urban studies who are seeking a sophisticated yet readable overview of Benjamin’s work. It will also prove rewarding reading for those already well-versed in Benjaminian thought.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I haven’t read any other introduction to Benjamin, so I couldn’t say if this one is the “best”. However, I find it hard to imagine a better introduction than Gilloch’s. It is lucid and very accessible, but above all, inspiring and beautifully written. I am an amateur, self-taught into philosophy, so I tend to read a lot of introductory texts. They are usually just useful instruments to pave your way towards a philosopher, but I would say this one is worth reading on its own right. It is full of insightful metaphors and literary value. From reading it I could get a sense of the deep respect the author has for Benjamin. An attempt is made to do him justice by inspiring others readers to dive into the original texts. You won’t find one paragraph of dry academic writing here. Overall great book!edit: I decided to include a short passage of the text, just to give an example of how well written it is:”Berlin becomes legible only in the last throws of departure. ‘Berlin Chronicle’ and ‘A Berlin Childhood around 1900’ are thus far more than mere autobiographical exercises. They are fragile constellations constituted at a specific historical moment: when the ‘at first sight’ of the child intersects with the ‘at last sight’ of the imminent exile. They are Benjamin’s Tableaux berlinoises, precious pictures of places past and places passed, written by the leave-taker with the urgency and intensity, the heartache and hopelessness, of ‘love at last sight’. (p.223)

⭐A good, lucid read that explains a very deep and intellectual and his writings. What I liked best about this book was the summaries at the end of each chapter.

⭐This is probably the best book on Benjamin currently out there. It is clear, very well written, and full of good ideas. There are others, mostly jargon or hobbyhorse ridden. The author’s other book “Myth and Metropolis” is also fine.
