Description

Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American novelist, dark romantic, and short story writer. He was born in 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, to Nathaniel Hathorne and the former Elizabeth Clarke Manning. His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. He entered Bowdoin College in 1821, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1824, and graduated in 1825. He published his first work in 1828, the novel Fanshawe; he later tried to suppress it, feeling that it was not equal to the standard of his later work. He published several short stories in periodicals, which he collected in 1837 as Twice-Told Tales. The next year, he became engaged to Sophia Peabody. He worked at the Boston Custom House and joined Brook Farm, a transcendentalist community, before marrying Peabody in 1842. The couple moved to The Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, later moving to Salem, the Berkshires, then to The Wayside in Concord. The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels. A political appointment as consul took Hawthorne and family to Europe before their return to Concord in 1860. Hawthorne died on May 19, 1864, and was survived by his wife and their three children.Featuring:FanshaweThe Scarlet LetterThe House of the Seven GablesThe Blithedale RomanceThe Marble FaunThe Dolliver RomanceSeptimius Felton; or, the Elixir of LifeDoctor Grimshawe’s SecretTwice-Told TalesThe Whole History of Grandfather’s ChairBiographical StoriesandMosses from an Old Manse

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Hawthorne rests on the shelves of literary classics for good reason; he is able to talk about deep spiritual issues without sounding particularly religious. Sure, there is plenty of religion in “The Scarlet Letter” but it serves only as a backdrop for the story that ensues. “The Bosom Snake” may have a bit more theology in it but even that is well concealed. I like teaching Hawthorne because it gives me the chance to talk about some of the deeper aspects of life without anyone feeling offended. I will say that Hawthorne’s language and syntax can be difficult for younger students. He is not an easy read for younger students, but great for upper class-men in high school.

⭐Good collection. I thought I should start reading the more well known literature, and Hawthorn is a way to start, but wow, it is a bit dry. Great price. I got the kindle version and you cant tab between books so you have to push the button 100 times to get to the next book. Not crazy about that. Sorry Hawthorn- I know I should be more literarily inclined, but just a bit hard to read on my kindle. I will get around to it, but its not jumping out of the shelves at me.

⭐This collection contains Hawthorne’s best books, and I believe that he ranks with the greatest authors including Shakespeare, Cervantes, Hugo, Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. His advanced vocabulary requires a dictionary at times, but also adds great depth to his writing. My favorite of his works is the “House of the Seven Gables.” It not only provides you with keen insight into the characters, but also includes you in the development of the plot. He is a great story teller, but his books require your full attention.

⭐I chose this collection because we are visiting Salem,MA and will be visiting The House of the Seven Gables so I wanted to have some Hawthorne reading under my belt. This collection was difficult to wade through and I never did find The House of the Seven Gables. Very disappointing! I wound up ordering that as a single just so I could read the book I wanted in the first place.

⭐I am still reading this book. The writing is very flowery, so different from today’s writing. It is beautiful, but after a while you wish he would just get to the point.

⭐This is such a wonderful collection of short stories that are interesting, readable, gripping – in some cases – and just plainenjoyable on so many levels. I’m so pleased to have it.

⭐If you like him, he’s all there.

⭐The narrator is Italian, apparently a non-native English speaker, with a strong accent. Some words (including “Nathaniel”) are mispronounced. The stories include:The BirthmarkRappacini’s DaughterForewordThe Great CarbuncleThe Ambitious GuestYoung Goodman BrownThe Celestial RailroadThe Minister’s Black Veil
